In a Top 8 that had played host to some of the biggest names on the Open Series the finals found itself occupied by local ringers. Scott Barrentine has had some success in Star City events before but Blake has had a lot today—he cruised through the Swiss to first seed at a 7-1 record. He crashed through Adam Cai and Gerry Thompson en route to this finale and now Affinity stood to change the guard of Legacy in a matchup against Merfolk.
Blake took down the die roll and thought over his hand before deciding to ship it back for a fresh six. Scott kept his hand and they were off to the races. Blake started with Seat of the Synod Mox Opal Signal Pest and Frogmite—not bad for six. Scott had an island and a Cursecatcher passing quickly. Blinkmoth Nexus for Blake gave him an air force and he attacked for 3 with Frogmite thanks to the Pest before tapping out to cast Myr Enforcer. A Daze countered the 4/4 and Blake ended his turn.
All Scott could do was attack for 1 and replay his Island but when Blake attempted Cranial Plating he immediately Forced pitching Merrow Reejerey. He fell to 13 on Frogmite's attack and then began to add real creatures to the board. Silvergill Adept revealed a second Adept but the board worsened for Scott when Etched Champion resolve on Blake's next turn. Blake declined to risk trading his Frogmite for the Adept and passed the turn.
Scott dropped a second Adept revealing Lord of Atlantis and then an Island. A second Etched Champion resolved on Blake's next turn the Echoing Truth in Scott's hand laughing at him and he fell to 10 as the first Champion attacked with Signal Pest. Scott drew and contemplated his position stuck against a pair of Etched Champions he had very nearly no outs against beyond racing. Lord of Atlantis boosted his fish but he decline to attack and ended his turn.
A Thoughtcast resolved for Blake and he played a second Seat of the Synod afterward Thoughtcasting a second time. He dropped a Frogmite on the free and a Myr Enforcer—no responses from Scott. Blake began counting the damage he could force through but Scott threw off that math by casting Echoing Truth on Signal Pest. Blake decided to attack with both Etched Champions and recast the Pest prompting Scott to concede.

Scott would be on the play in the second game and his hand was packing a pair of Islands and plenty of Lords with Lord of Atlantis Merrow Reejerey and two Coralhelm Commanders alongside a Daze. After tanking for some time he decided to mulligan. “That hand played way too fair” he said likely wanting an Aether Vial to keep such a hand. Blake hung on to his opener and Scott kept his six. He played an Island and passed.
Blake cast Ornithopter and Memnite after playing Vault of Whispers followed by a Springleaf Drum and a Frogmite. “See what I mean by too fair?” Scott asked. The Drum enabled a Pithing Needle which Blake used to name Wasteland. Scott drew and played Mutavault passing the turn immediately. Blake resolved Myr Enforcer on the second turn and Scott was in deep trouble. The Frogmite dropped him to 18 and a second Myr Enforcer resolved after combat.
Scott drew whiffing on a land but finding one as he cast Silvergill Adept. “This hand is feeling rather fair as well” he decided. Master of Etherium from Blake met a Daze countering the artifact lord but Blake sent his team in anyway. The Adept traded with Frogmite and Scott took 9 from the Enforcers and Memnite facing lethal damage. He passed after replaying his Island on the next turn relying on Mutavaults to chump but a Cranial Plating on Ornithopter might remove that option . . . but Hurkyll's Recall saved the day!
Blake replayed his Vault Ornithopter Memnite and Springleaf Drum without incident but Pithing Needle earned some thought from Scott. He decided to Force of Will pitching Coralhelm Commander. An Island off the top allowed him to profitably cast Standstill with his Mutavault there to hold the fort. Blake had little choice but to break it—the only question was when. He began with a Frogmite drawing Scott a pair of lands and an Aether Vial as the Frogmite resolved.
Plating resolved then both Enforcers and the Drum equipped the playing to Ornithopter. “Resolves” Scott said and he then took a second look. “Oh I'm just dead aren't I?” Indeed he was.
