Dan Jordan has shown himself to be an adept Standard player with three Open championships in the books already but Legacy success has eluded him. Calosso Fuentes has ground out a couple of strong ones including a Legacy Open finals appearance. Good friends Dan and Calosso were all jokes as they sat down for the day's final match.
Dan took the play and both players kept their starting hands. Dan leads Bayou to Calosso's Tropical Island and Dan plays his own Tropical Island and Dark Confidant. Cracking Flooded Strand for a Tundra Calosso removed the 2/1 from the game with Swords to Plowshares.
Dan spent the third turn fetching a second black source for Hymn to Tourach and Calosso cast Brainstorm in response losing a Deed and a Polluted Delta. Calosso used Wasteland to destroy Dan's Tropical Island and then cast Standstill. Dan played another Tropical and passed. Calosso played Creeping Tar Pit and did likewise.
Verdant Catacombs go from Dan Jordan and a Mishra's Factory go from Calosso demonstrated what “standstill” truly meant. Dan broke the silence with Dark Confidant on the following turn resolving the 2/1 once again. Calosso animated a Factory and attacked Dan back down to 19 life passing the turn.
Dan revealed Spell Snare to Dark Confidant and drew sending Bob at Calosso for 2 damage before adding Tarmogoyf to the board. Enlightened Tutor during the end step resolved for Calosso searching up Engineered Explosives. Would he play it around Dan's Spell Snare? He did so for three mana meriting a Force of Will from Dan removing Force while Calosso jammed the spell down with his own Force of Will removing Teferi's Response. The Explosives killed the board.
Dan drew and passed after playing a land and Calosso dropped Knight of the Reliquary before attacking with Mishra's Factory. He lost the big man to Go for the Throat during the end step. Drawing a Thoughtseize Dan immediately cast it to discard Calosso's Standstill but he had Sensei's Divining Top on top of the deck.
The Top didn't even matter much. A couple more attacks from the Factories and Dan conceded the game.
Calosso 1 Dan 0
Dan opened on Underground Sea and Ponder shuffling the top three cards of the deck for a random. Calosso had just a Tundra which he promptly lost to a Wasteland during his upkeep. He Brainstormed in response adding Polluted Delta to the field afterward.
Cracking a Delta of his own Dan sent Hymn to Tourach at Calosso. Removing Force of Will for Force of Will Calosso countered the discard spell. He cracked Delta for a Tundra and then untapped to drop Wasteland on Dan's Underground Sea. Dan drew and used Wasteland on Calosso's upkeep putting him on zero alnds once again—he played Underground Sea and passed.
Dan Jordan played Tropical Island and Dark Confidant headlong into Calosso's Spell Snare and Calosso untapped into Mishra's Factory and Standstill. A Brainstorm from Dan broke the enchantment and Polluted Delta found him an Underground Sea and Hymn to Tourach the second pitching Swords and Tropical Island. Calosso attacked with his Factory and played Scrubland.
Shipping the turn without a fourth land Dan didn't take any damage from Calosso on the next turn as Calosso rested on four lands. Dan drew and cast Brainstorm on his own turn adding Wasteland to the field and casting Tarmogoyf. Swords to Plowshares removed the 5/6 from the game and Wasteland destroyed Calosso's Mishra's Factory—he passed turn.
Dan drew and passed as did Calosso and Dan did so again with another fetchland joining Calosso's board. Dan fetched a land and tapped out for Terravore but Calosso was prepared with an old-fashioned Counterspell fetching up a second blue source. Calosso's Sensei's Divining Top earned a Force of Will from Dan and Calosso played Maze of Ith to end the turn.
Bob off the Top gave Dan's hand new life although he remained on three lands with Jace and a Go for the Throat stuck in his hand. That was bad news for Dan as Calosso cast his own copy of the planeswalker on the following turn bouncing Dark Confidant.
Dan deployed Bob once again on the following turn and Calosso bounced it again before casting Top again. Spell Snare countered Bob on the way back down this time and Calosso began to dig into the deck with Sensei's Divining Top. Untapping the brainstorms began with Jace leading to a dangerous Crucible of Worlds. Spell Pierce failed to counter it as Calosso Forced the Pierce by removing a Standstill. That effectively ended the game a never-ending stream of Wastelands springing forth.
“Yeah this matchup's not good” Dan decided.
