Drafting With Brad! NMS #4
Tormentor Exarch might not be as good as Skinrender but is in the same family. A creature that comes into play killing another is always very good. It is also a red card which is my favorite color to try to get into.
Maul Splicer might be coming back since it's a very undervalued card. I think it is much better than most of the cards in the pack but I also really love R/G Dinosaur decks. Necropouncer will be taken before the Splicer even though I have no reason why. I have yet to play with this card but it seems really bad.
Pack 1 pick 2:
Volt Charge is the clear pick in this pack since it is removal and is the same color as our first pick. Wing Splicer is also a great card to pass here because I am not a big fan of the color blue. The first two packs are setting up nicely for my preferences.
Pack 1 pick 3:
Nothing really out of the ordinary with this pack. Glissa's Scorn is the best card but it goes very late most of the time. I have seen this card table even. It is a decent removal spell that finds homes in most of my decks.
While believing that Maul Splicer will table I really want to move into G/R and hope the packs allow me to do so.
Pack 1 pick 4:
This pack makes me feel that someone is forcing a strategy to our right. I can see Volt Charge being a third pick but never fourth. This means there could have been up to two cards better than it but the person to our right took a card for a different strategy. Picks like this make going into red now the most important choice.
Not only am I already red but it would be the time to move into it. We are passing some decently slow cards for blue and white and another Parasitic Implant. There could very well be a person to our right going into white infect since this is the second Shriek Raptor we've passed.
Pack 1 pick 5:
This pick is really just hedging my bets. There are a few green and red spells that usually make the playable cut. The funny thing is that they also can table in this position.
There is an Impaler Shrike but I am not interested into moving into that color just because of this card. Many people might do so and I think it is a mistake. Impaler Shrike is a decent blue card but not one I want to be taking yet. I would rather take the fixer that also combos with future Wellsprings since the more you have the better cards get that sacrifice artifacts.
Pack 1 pick 6:
It might just be insane intuition but there are very few cards I want more than Artillerize after picking an early Mycosynth Wellspring.
Blue cards are flowing so I might have to jump back into the color if no one bites on it for pack two.
Pack 1 pick 7:
Pack 1 pick 8:
At this point this pick is a waste if the other Splicer comes back. I rarely play two of them in a deck and only would if I am short playables. Lost Leonin is a good card but also a better signal to let someone table. This will make sure they go into their strategy and get out of mine. I don't know if green will be open however and maybe should have taken the Impaler Shrike.
Pack 1 pick 9:
A small victory for calling the card to table but it doesn't prove anything yet. We now have two copies of a card we only want one of and we still don't have any idea if green is being drafted.
Pack 1 pick 10:
Pack 1 pick 11:
Pack 1 pick 12:
Pack 1 pick 13:
This pick proves that green should be open at least on our right. Rotted Hystrix isn't an amazing card but will usually get picked up by a player in the color. It still beats down in a deck with a decent number of removal spells.
Pack 1 pick 14:
Pack 1 pick 15:
Pack 2 pick 1:
I don't know if anyone would take Burn the Impure over Kuldotha Flamefiend but I guess it's worth talking about. Even though we don't have any artifacts we should get enough to support the card. Flamefiend is a card worth building around a little so taking a few artifacts is better than not having it and having Burn the Impure instead.
Pack 2 pick 2:
Obviously we take the Burn the Impure but the real reason this pack is interesting is all of the green cards. Depending on what happens the next few picks will let us know if we will get Melira's Keepers or Mirran Mettle back.
Pack 2 pick 3:
Viridian Emissary doesn't make many decks of mine but it will be good in this one if green opens up. This pack is also weak enough to make a pick like this. Tangle Mantis is a fine card but most R/G decks have enough four-drops to pick from; however they're limited in early-game cards if pack one isn't there for it. The 2/1 will fit well in the deck and with the Artillerize.
Pack 2 pick 4:
This is a very close pick. Spread the Sickness is a great removal spell and very splashable with a Wellspring. The problem is we not only have a Kuldotha Flamefiend to think about but no clue what our colors will end up being. Having fixing could give us a chance to be red with two splashes later. This might be the wrong pick but I stand by it and hope to get some fat to go with it.
Pack 2 pick 5:
This pack means green is open but the selection of cards is low. I am happy to get some monsters and hope there's more to come.
Pack 2 pick 6:
Ogre Resister > Tangle Mantis
Pack 2 pick 7:
Melira's Keeper > Kuldotha Ringleader. Morbid Plunder still in this pack is rather interesting. I don't think I read anything wrong in this draft but black being that open is surprising.
Pack 2 pick 8:
Pack 2 pick 9:
This is strange. I have never seen a Flayer Husk table since infect players are looking for infect cards in this pack. I take Equipment if no infect creatures or removal are in the pack. This makes me think infect is not being drafted heavily and there may only be a couple in that archetype.

Pack 3 pick 1:
Cerebral Eruption is not a mass removal spell. It is not bad. It is not worse than other red removal spells. However it is not amazing. It kills small creatures and does a good job at breaking up boards but you don't want this card if you have a tough time with big creatures. This is the weenie killer and only should be used for that reason and this is the only reason it's better than Galvanic Blast in this deck. Sylvok Replica in the pack makes this pick more difficult. I draft Cerebral Eruption almost every time I see it so I've played with it many times and I've had good success with it.
Pack 3 pick 2:
This pack is terrible for us so we might as well fix our early curve a bit.
Pack 3 pick 3:
Another terrible pack. Genesis Wave is terrible nowadays. I would just rather have the anti-flying sideboard card.
Pack 3 pick 4:
When I have two Fangren Marauders I have the best endgame in a match which I love. This is the only deck where I want a Tower of Calamities.
Pack 3 pick 5:
We really don't need any more monsters but three-drops are looking a bit low. I also don't want to have to use all of the removal we have on early guys since we can't deal with them. There is a higher chance of playing Replica as just a 1/4.
Pack 3 pick 6:
Not a bad card to have in a deck like this. We will only use this card when we really have to and most of the time the board will be stalled. Many better cards but nothing in this pack.
Pack 3 pick 7:
This is one of the best cards to get late when in green. I love this guy and he is so amazing in play.
Pack 3 pick 8:
I will be attacking and it will be for a lot.
Pack 3 pick 9:
Did I sign up for the Swiss round draft again? Honestly have no clue how this happened. I think back on the pack to see why but it makes no sense. Am I the only green drafter?

I decided to play the Melira's Keepers over the Rotted Hystrix because of the fear of infect. The pick where I got the late Flayer Husk makes this pick wrong. I think the 3/6s would have been much better in my deck.
There really isn't much more to say about this deck. I drafted G/R monsters and it turned out well. The deck is insane and I hope to 3-0 with it.
