Financial Value Of Gatecrash VII

Ben’s daily updates on Gatecrash’s financial value continue with Biomass Mutation, Prime Speaker Zegana, and Frontline Medic…with an update on Mind Grind!

Hey everyone! Welcome back to my look at the Financial Value of Gatecrash! This is the second set release where I’ve done daily updates (versus one big article at the end of the cycle), and I feel that it’s allowed me to better discuss changes with the demand and values of cards. Now that we’re about halfway through the set spoilers, I’d like to solicit feedback about the format on this series. What do you like? What do you dislike? Do you have any suggestions for improvement, either in content or formatting? We’re still in flux with using this format, so any and all suggestions would be appreciated!
Let’s get to today’s cards!
New Cards
Biomass Mutation

Starting Price: $1.50
Current Price: $2

Thoughts:
In the hour that I’ve had this card up before writing this article, we’ve already sold out multiple times at $1.50. I raised the price to $2. I don’t think this card compares favorably to other mass-creature boosting spells (Overrun comes to mind), but this is the type of card that really appeals to casual players. I’d think this settles in the $1-$1.50 range post-release.

Prime Speaker Zegana

Starting Price: $13

Current Price: $15

Thoughts:
Tremendous creature for Commander play. Great follow-up creature to Thragtusk—even if they kill your Thragtusk, you still ending up with Prime Speaker Zegana as a 4/4 that draws three cards when it comes into play. Should see a lot of Standard play in Ramp decks.

[card name="Frontline Medic"]Frontline Medic[/card]

{2W} for 3/3 Human Cleric

Battalion — Whenever [card name="Frontline Medic"]Frontline Medic[/card] and at least two other creatures attack, creatures you control are indestructible this turn.

[card name="Sacrifice"]Sacrifice[/card] [card name="Frontline Medic"]Frontline Medic[/card]: Counter target spell with {X} in its mana cost unles its controller pays {3}.

Frontline Medic

Starting Price: $4

Thoughts: A medium-sized body for the mana cost (and I can remember the days where a 3/3 for three would be something special) with two situational effects. The second ability is the bread and butter—there are several X spells worth countering in the current Standard (Bonfire of the Damned, Sphinx’s Revelation), and I believe that ability is a lot more relevant than the battalion ability. Since Frontline Medic only costs a single white mana, it’s easily splashable as a sideboard card for decks that want to beat ramp/control. Should be a solid role-player and be a $3-$5 staple in the new Standard.

Recap of Spoiled Cards
Clan Defiance

Starting Price: $4

Current Price: $5

Thoughts:
The midrange playable cards in Return to Ravnica all started to hit the $6-$10 range right at release—Abrupt Decay, Detention Sphere, Lotleth Troll. Both Clan Defiance and High Priest of Penance are the same type of card. Also note the above cards dropped to the $3-$6 range a month after release. I think Clan Defiance and High Priest of Penance will follow the same trajectory.

High Priest of Penance

Starting Price: $5

Current Price: $6

Thoughts:
See Clan Defiance, above. For what it’s worth, I think Clan Defiance has a better chance of maintaining value than the High Priest.
