Daily Financial Value Of Theros (9/6)

Get the financial scoop on the latest spoiled Theros cards from StarCityGames.com’s General Manager and finance guru Ben Bleiweiss!

Today ends the first full week of Financial Reviews for Theros! In today’s update, we have the cycle of Dual Lands for this set, and a handful of other rares. Let’s dip into the reviews!

How I review:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price—Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Theros.
Future Price—Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Born of the Gods) comes out.
Future Price—Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now when the next fall set is released (name unknown).

Arbor Colossus

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.75

Future Price (Long Term): $1

I’d compare this to Silklash Spider, which was intermittently a sideboard card when decks with a lot of flying creatures (Spirits, et al) started seeing Standard play. Silklash Spider was better as a hate card, because it could repeatedly sweep. Arbor Colossus is better as a card you’d want to main deck. This is a solid but completely unexciting card, and will probably sit at around bulk values but be tradable (unlike truly useless bulk) as a throw-in on trades.

Fleecemane Lion

Starting Price: $6

Current Price: $6

Future Price (Short Term): $4

Future Price (Medium Term): $2

Future Price (Long Term): $2

Kalonian Tusker and Call of the Conclave aren’t exactly dominating Standard right now, and Fleecemane Lion competes in the two-slot for W/G decks against Voice of Resurgence. I can’t get behind the hype on this card – yes, it can become a 4/4 hexproof indestructible creature, but you’re putting seven mana into it at this point. The majority of the time you’re looking at getting a 3/3 vanilla creature for two mana, and the value of that card at Uncommon is $0.49 (against a $0.25 UC Bulk price).

Prophet of Kruphix

Starting Price: $4

Current Price: $4

Future Price (Short Term): $3

Future Price (Medium Term): $3

Future Price (Long Term): $4

Will likely drop some because this type of card usually drops in the short term, but look at the pedigree it’s competing with in the long-term:

Murkfiend Liege – $10 (1 Printing – Eventide)

Seedborn Muse – $8 (3 Printings – 9th Edition, 10th Edition, Legions)

If this card drops to the $2-$3 range, I’d stock up on them for long-term (2+ years down the road) potentially, because it will be a casual powerhouse.

Temple of Abandon / Temple of Deceit / Temple of Mystery / Temple of Silence / Temple of Triumph

Starting Price: $5

Current Price: $5

Future Price (Short Term): $6-8

Future Price (Medium Term): $6-8

Future Price (Long Term): $8-10

Pardon the price range being all over the place, but it’s difficult to say which color combinations will end up working out the best in Standard. The range isn’t to say that ALL of them will end up in the $6-$8 range – just that the popular ones will be closer to $8 and the less-popular ones will be closer to $6. These are very solid, digging down a card in your deck is a very good effect when you get it for free, and these lands have a huge amount of potential a year from now once Return to Ravnica rotates out of Standard. Guildgates were already seeing Standard play, and these are strictly better than Guildgates (give or take Maze’s End decks).

And as is tradition, here are the top-selling cards after one week of presales!

Gross Sales Volume Top 10:

Adjusted Sales Volume Top 10 (Divide # of Rares sold by 2, to adjust for expected quantities to presell)

Thank you all for reading, and I look forward to discussing more cards next week!
