It's day two of the Magic 2015 spoiler season! There are two new cards that were spoiled overnight, so let's take today to look at them, then we'll also set up the “what is the pack value of an M15 pack?” section for the end of the article...
How I review:
Starting Price: The first price we assign to the card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price (Short Term): The price I believe the card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Magic 2015.
Future Price (Medium Term): The price I believe the card will be at by the time the next set (Khans of Tarkir) comes out.
Future Price (Long Term): The price I believe the card will be at a year from now, when M16 is released.
Starting Price: $2
Current Price: $2
Future Price (Short Term): $3
Future Price (Medium Term): $3
Future Price (Long Term): $4
This is a card that every Sliver Player is going to want four copies of. Assuming this is a one-and-done (not reprinted elsewhere in a box set, duel deck or event deck), Sliver Hive has a lot of potential for long-long term value (2+ years)
Starting Price: $8
Current Price: $8
Future Price (Short Term): $6
Future Price (Medium Term): $6
Future Price (Long Term): $5
The same body and French vanilla ability as Grave Titan (6/6 deathtouch for 6). Making 2/2 zombies is better than a three-times Raise Dead effect, especially when the zombies were free and the Raise Dead costs five mana. However, this is a fantastic drop after the board clears, and will see play in black control decks as a 1- to 2-of in Standard. Getting back your entire devotion suite after a board sweeper is a worthwhile investment, though I don't think it's going to see play as a 4-of.
To determine the value of a booster pack, I'm going to start with the following formula:
(2R + 1M) / 80
That isn't enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don't really amount to “real” value if you're looking to trade with other players. So I'm omitting the value of any Rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any Mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).
20 out of the 53 Rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!
Chasm Skulker: $2
Genesis Hydra: $2.50
Sliver Hive: $2
Spirit Bonds: $2
Waste Not: $10
Total Rare Value: $25.50
Five out of the fifteen Mythic Rares have been spoiled:
Soul of New Phyrexia: $15
Soul of Ravnica: $5
Soul of Shandalar: $10
Soul of Zendikar: $5
Total Mythic Value: $43
So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:
(2R ($25.50) + 1M ($43)) = $94
$94/80 = $1.175 value per pack, or $42.30 per box.
Keep in mind that only 37% of the Rares and 33% of the Mythics for this set have been spoiled. If we multiply this number out by 3x, we're looking at around $126 value per box. We'll see how things hold up over the coming days!
StarCityGames.com has our first of two preview cards going up at midnight tonight (12:00am on Wednesday, June 25th), so we'll have at least one new Mythic Rare to discuss tomorrow! Until then, all discussion is encouraged!
