Winning the die roll AJ evaluated his hand carefully before keeping while Tim kept immediately upon hearing AJ's affirmative. Scalding Tarn for a Volcanic Island and a Grim Lavamancer hit the board and Tim frowned. He cracked Marsh Flats for a Plains and passed to AJ. Academy Ruins and an attack for 1 damage followed dropping Tim to 18. A second Lavamancer landed and AJ passed back to Tim who was no longer interested in casting Swords to Plowshares. He did fall to 17 for second Marsh Flats and a Swamp casting Swords on the new Lavamancer and passing the turn.
He fell to 16 as AJ's little beater continued and Trinket Mage joined the party on the following min phase when AJ played a Wasteland. Searching up a Sensei's Divining Top AJ ended his turn after finding one. Tim cast Tidehollow Sculler for a peek at AJ's hand after playing Scrubland spotting Fire/Ice Jace Daze and the Top. He decided to take the Top and play Mother of Runes passing the turn to AJ after Daze countered her.
AJ burned the Sculler with Lavamancer and reclaimed his Top casting it and then attacking with Trinket Mage to put Tim on 14 life. With Wasteland untapped AJ shipped the turn. Tapping out Tim tried a Vindicate on the Lavamancer and AJ allowed it to resolve after a quick check of the top three cards Sensei's Divining Top. Tim missed his fourth land drop just as AJ had and ended the turn.
Another 2 damage from Trinket Mage put Tim on 12 and AJ Topped again to see the third card. He passed afterward declining to Wasteland Tim off his second white mana. When he cast Serra Avenger Spell Snare shut down the angelic defender.
Tim fell to 10 life as Trinket Mage attacked again a second Trinket Mage landing soon after to search up Engineered Explosives. Phyrexian Revoker for Tim named Engineered Explosives and Tim ended the turn with Swords to Plowshares available.
An upkeep spin of the Top followed by a main phase Brainstorm was a sure sign that AJ has found some goodies. He played a Misty Rainforest and attacked with both Mages losing one to Swords but knocking Tim to 8 when he declined a block. On Tim's turn he cast Tidehollow Sculler. AJ responded by popping his Top and casting Force of Will removing an additional Trinket Mage. Tim ended the turn now stuck in a spot where he would need to start blocking soon.
Of course AJ lost his interest in aggression once he untapped and fetched a Volcanic Island casting Jace the Mind Sculptor. He found a fifth land on top of the deck and followed with Sensei's Divining Top passing the turn with his Trinket Mage on guard duty. A second Phyrexian Revoker on Jace from Tim was exactly what AJ wanted to see.
Fire/Ice eliminated both once AJ drew it from its hiding spot on top of the deck—safe from all disruption. Trinket Mage knocked Tim to 6 life and AJ used Wasteland to destroy Tim's Scrubland before ending the turn. During AJ's end step Tim used Enlightened Tutor to find another Revoker for Jace but this game was rapidly winding to a close—the planeswalker had done his damage.
Engineered Explosives on two counters killed the Revoker and Jace brainstormed against as Trinket Mage attacked Tim to 4 life. Serra Avenger as a last-ditch effort failed when AJ revealed the two additional Fire/Ices he had in his hand aiming four damage right at Tim's dome.
AJ 1 Tim 0
Plains Mother of Runes looked like an ideal opening for Tim. Now he could make steps toward protecting his creatures. When AJ passed the turn with just a Volcanic Island Tim's Dark Confidant looked even sweeter—but a Daze dashed those dreams. Playing an Island now AJ ended the turn again.
A second Dark Confidant met Spell Snare from AJ and Tim sighed keeping his Mother of Runes untapped. AJ's Volcanic Island returned to the party on the following turn for a Sensei's Divining Top and he ended the turn. When Tim tried Serra Avenger Force of Will removing Stifle countered the beater and left Tim running low on threats. He cast Aether Vial and ended the turn. AJ's Engineered Explosives on one looked great after that play and Tim sighed.
Phyrexian Revoker from Tim earned a detonation from AJ wiping Aether Vial and Mother of Runes from the field. The Revoker named Top with the Explosives gone. On two Volcanic Islands and an Island AJ contemplated his choices. Tim had two cards left with just Revoker on the field the definition of non-threatening. Cracking Scalding Tarn AJ found a third Volcanic Island and cast Jace the Mind Sculptor to brainstorm.
Way behind Tim pulled at the top of his deck for help. A Chalice of the Void on one wasn't much and AJ allowed it to resolve as Revoker attacked Jace for only 2 damage leaving the planeswalker alive. The next turn started with a fateseal and AJ chose to leave Sword of Fire and Ice on top of Tim's deck. With only three lands he'd be hard-pressed to use it very effectively. An Engineered Explosives on zero would solve AJ's Chalice problem and he ended the turn.
Sword resolved and Revoker took another swing at Jace. Chalice binned during the end step when AJ blew his explosives and Academy Ruins put the artifact back on top of AJ's deck. The next fateseal went to the bottom and AJ played Explosives on two counters and a Top before passing the turn.
Phyrexian Revoker picked up the Sword but a boom removed him from the board before he could connect. During his turn AJ put Explosives on top of the deck following with a brainstorm via Jace to pick it up. He recast it on two counters knowing it would murder virtually every true threat in Tim's deck effectively locking him out of the game.
Tim fought on casting Stoneforge Mystic to find Umezawa's Jitte. “Recurring Engineered Explosives is kind of a problem” Tim admitted. “How many Wastelands have you sent to the bottom?” A maximum of one for those falling along at home. AJ fatesealed on the following turn and left the card passing to Tim as Jace began to grow.
Equipping Stoneforge again earned some Explosives and AJ put it back on top with Academy Ruins. Drawing for turn he fatesealed and left the card once again keeping Tim in the soft lock as he recast Explosives on two. Tim drew Phyrexian Revoker and played it losing the 2/1 to a Spell Snare this time as AJ reached for a turn without using Academy Ruins.
That let him Top and draw immediately fatesealing Tim for a card and putting Jace on 9 loyalty. Trinket Mage followed for Pithing Needle and AJ cast the Needle to name Wasteland. That perfected his lockdown and Tim conceded the game.
