The StarCityGames.com Power Nine Tournament #8: Shooting Stars!
Canadian Domination!
The stars all fell here in Rochester, and when the dust settled it was a French Canadian that was left standing. Going into the final round, there were three Shooting Stars with a good chance to make the Top 8, but when Josh Rider and Rich Hoaen both lost, that left only Adam Chambers - Osyp Lebedowicz's Star stand-in - as the only Shooting Star in the Top 8. Joining Chambers in the elimination rounds were two other Americans and an astounding five Canadians. Chambers fell in the quarterfinals, but the Canadians continued to dominate, culminating in an all-Canadian, two-hour final between Ugo Rivard and Peter Olszewski. The two men split the first two games, before an extremely tense third game where Olszewski fought and scrapped just to stay alive for forty minutes until Rivard finally drew the decisive Yawgmoth's Will and finished things. Congratulations to Ugo Rivard, the Star City Power 9 Rochester champion!

Quarterfinals - Nikola Rosu vs. Adam Chambers
by Carl Winter
A StarCityGames.Com Premium Article!
Rosu kicked off the match with a Mox Sapphire and Mishra's Factory, which he used to cast a Cloud of Faeries. Chamber's first play was a Tropical Island and Basking Rootwalla. Rosu's next turn saw him Wasteland Chamber's Tropical and swing in with his Factory and Faeries. Rosu was able to force through a Crucible of Worlds with a Daze and Force of Will to stop both of Chamber's Force of Wills. Chambers thought for a bit, shook his head, and scooped up his cards for the next game putting him on the brink of elimination and his first match loss of the day.

Round 8 - Rich Mattiuzzo vs. Rich Hoaen
by Andy Probasco
A StarCityGames.Com Premium Article!
Before the match began, the players spent a considerable amount of time discussing the different tiebreaker connotations and whether or not Mattiuzzo could afford to draw. Hoaen's tiebreakers were definitely good enough to make him a lock for the Top 8 with a draw, but the other Canadian Richard was not so fortunate and eventually decided that he had to play it out or likely draw himself into something less than the Top 8.
