SACRAMENTO, CA
Open Weekend
March 17-18 STANDARD
It took a full day of work, but we have found our Sacramento Legacy Open champion! Oregon’s Phillip Contreras threw Legacy back to its beatdown roots, smashing through a 117 player field with a Bant deck featuring Unstable Mutation and Psionic Blast to join Standard Open champion Beaux Bruggman and Draft Open champions Aldrich Saplan and Jason Smyth in taking home some hardware and an Invitational invite over the weekend. We hope you enjoyed the @SCGLive crew’s coverage of the StarCityGames.com Open Series in Sacramento, and can’t wait for you to join us next weekend in Baltimore for the first of four Open Series Invitationals on the year! For all of us at #SCGCA, good night and thanks for watching!

The Legacy Open finals was an exercise in contrast. Noble Hierarch and Qasali Pridemage kicked things off for Phillip, giving his aggressive Bant deck a quick burst of damage. Brett Parise has been hovering near the top of the standings all day as his unique Goblins deck has fought through all kinds of resistance. With one loss apiece, Blaine and Tony were unable to safely draw into the Top 8 and would have to battle it out for the spot. Sitting on matching 4-1 records in the penultimate round, Josh and Richard had good shots to make the Top 8, but they needed a critical win here. It was a battle between northern and southern California here in round five with Jacob Kory’s green-white Maverick deck staring down Brett Parise’s unique Goblins build. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Enchantress make a splash in a Legacy Open, but there are multiple copies of the deck doing well here today.

Former Sacramento native Beaux Bruggman masterfully piloted his Esper Control deck all the way to the finals of the Standard Open, and the trophy was in sight. A mulligan led to a brutally slow start for Vishaal despite having multiple pieces of his early game in place. Finishing squarely in the middle of the Top 8 pack, Vishaal Desai and Edward Gibbs were destined to face off in the first round of the playoffs. Beaux had a one point lead in the standings over Blake and needed a win for a hope at getting into the Top 8, but Blake and his U/W Delver of Secrets deck was going to make him earn it. Local ringer Ricky Sidher was looking to make a run with his R/G Aggro deck, but both he and his opponent—Zachary Brown playing Esper Control—needed to win out in order to make the Top 8. Los Angeles Standard Open champion Daniel Choi has been busy working on his game since his big win with Monored, expanding his knowledge and skill with different decks in order to keep up with the evolving format. This Standard season has seen a ton of innovation in its multitude of interesting, effective decks, but we haven’t seen a deck utilizing Inquisitor Exarch do well until now. San Diego native John Kassari made the rainy trek up to Sacramento armed with a new spin on the RUG Ramp deck he piloted to a Top 8 appearance at the Los Angeles Standard Open earlier this year. |
