Quarterfinals: Ben Wienburg vs. Robbie Cordell
Robbie has one of the most exciting decks of the tournament, a black-green Rock deck that is very true to its predecessors. And he’s beaten his opponent, Los Angeles SCG Invitational finalist Ben Wienburg, once already today! Can he make it a two-fer?
Robbie, on the play, led with only Swamp while Ben used Temple Garden to play Champion of the Parish. Robbie cast Sign in Blood to draw two cards and fall to 18, and Ben had a quick follow up play of Clifftop Retreat into Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. Champion dropped Robbie to 16, and behind the Sphere of Resistance 2/1 eightball, he could only play Overgrown Tomb tapped and pass.
Robbie's Rock deck is here to rock you!
Ben cast Boros Elite and Experiment One to make Champion 4/4 sized and Robbie fell to 10. He cast Cremate on his own Sign in Blood to draw another card at end of turn, then passed the turn with four mana at the ready. Ben continued the onslaught, playing a fourth land before casting Frontline Medic and Evolving Experiment and growing Champion. Victim of Night took out the 5/5, and Robbie dropped to 3.
Robbie cast Mutilate to wipe Ben’s board on his turn, but Ben showed Robbie Flinthoof Boar to induce the concession.
Ben 1, Ronnie 0.
“That was a fast draw.”
“Pretty standard, honestly.”
“My hand beat everything but Thalia.”
Robbie once more took the play and kept his opener, while his opponent Ben led off with a mulligan. “Double Burning-Tree Emissary, one lander.” He kept his six.
Robbie started things off with Overgrown Tomb, and Ben led with not but a Temple Garden. Robbie played Swamp on turn two and passed, while Ben dropped Lightning Mauler… which was quickly given the (Tragic) Slip. Geralf’s Messenger is a lot scarier against more controlly opponents, but came down nonetheless for Robbie. Ben followed it with Viashino Firstblade to deal four to the Golgari pilot.
Ben Wienburg is casting Champion like a champion!
In came Geralf’s Messenger for Robbie, who continued to be the aggro by paying some life for another Overgrown Tomb, casting Garruk Relentless and howling for a 2/2 Wolf token. Wolf traded off with Firstblade, then Mayor of Avabruck and Thalia joined the fray for Ben. Garruk fought the Mayor, and after assaulting the city’s leader became Veil-Cursed. Desecration Demon came down to the party as well, and Robbie passed with a huge board advantage.
Ben cast another Mayor and Boros Elite, but Golgari Charm cast Nausea on the whole board and Robbie began his own offensive. Ben drew for his turn just in case, but found no outs on top of his deck after the Wrath of God took out his chances.
“Man, Golgari Charm is really good against me.”
Ben 1, Robbie 1.
After a long check about sleeves (which was resolved with a warning for Robbie), game 3 got underway when Ben led off with a keep… and Robbie started out with a mull to six. Once the action started, Cavern of Souls naming human dropped the Human Ooze Experiment One onto the board. Robbie had just a Swamp, while Burning-Tree Emissary and Mayor of Avabruck came into play for Ben. Robbie fell to 18, then 16 thanks to Sign in Blood. But Ben’s Blitz wasn’t done yet…
Ben 2, Robbie 1.
