Semifinals: Jason Blackmor vs. Gabe Costa-Giomi
Gabe Costa-Giomi was the lone representative of Sphinx’s Revelation in this top eight, and he faced a tough matchup in against Jason Blackmor’s G/W Aggro deck in the semifinal round.
Jason considers his sideboard options.
Jason got on the board immediately with a turn 1 Experiment one and a Turn 2 Voice of Resurgence, bashing Gabe down to 18. Gabe had Last Breath on his turn to deal with Voice of Resurgence, but the beats kept coming, as Jason played Ajani, Caller of the Pride to pump up his Experiment One further and attack for 3.
Detention Sphere was the turn 3 play for Gabe, but he took a moment to decide what to exile with it, eventually concluding that the 3/3 beater was a bigger problem than the Planeswalker. Jason had follow up threats in the form of Voice of Resurgence and Soldier of the Pantheon. Gabe shocked himself to 13 on his fourth turn to cast Jace, Architect of Thought, ticking up to give himself a little breathing room.
Jason untapped and started doing math, trying to determine if he could finish Gabe off. He concluded that he could not, and simply cast Spear of Heliod and attacked the Jace away with his creatures. Gabe had only a land and no other play, shipping it back to Jason. Jason used Ajani’s +1 ability and came swinging with a 4/4 Voice of Resurgence and a 5/4 Soldier of the Pantheon. Gabe briefly considered chump blocking with a Mutavault, but ultimately decided to take the beats and fall to 4. He drew his card and found no answer to the attackers and impending Planeswalker ultimate, and conceded the first game.

Gabe looks for a way to survive the beatdown.
Jason had the same opening this game as he did in the first, curving Experiment One into Voice of Resurgence. This time Gabe was on the play, and he got to respond to Voice of Resurgence with an Ultimate Price on the Experiment One. Gabe missed his third land, however, and Jason was quick to replace his threats, casting another Experiment One and a Fleecemane Lion to grow it to 2/2.
Gabe found his third land and cast Detention Sphere, deciding that Fleecemane Lion was the most problematic of Jason’s three creatures. The Voice and Experiment One attacked, knocking Gabe to 14, and Jason passed with mana up. Gabe simply played another Detention Sphere, exiling the Voice of Resurgence, but Jason had an end step Selesnya Charm to make a 2/2 Knight and keep the pressure on.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos came down, growing the Experiment One, and Jason attacked Gabe down to 9. Jason found a fourth land, but he was missing his second white source to cast Supreme Verdict. He settled for Doom Blade on the Brimaz. Jason untapped and cracked in, and Gabe took the damage again, falling to a precarious 4 life. Soldier of the Pantheon post-combat bolstered Jason’s forces further.
Gabe untapped and considered his options. He passed the turn, and Jason wasted no time bringing the beats. Gabe’s Mutavault jumped in front of Soldier of the Pantheon, and Gabe cast Mutavault on the 3/3 Experiment One. Jason had no tricks other than to regenerate his Experiment One, and Gabe fell to 2.
He drew his card, surveyed the board, and passed the turn. Jason played an enormous Mistcutter Hydra, crashed across with his three creatures, and Gabe extended the hand.
