Quarterfinals: Todd Anderson vs. Seth Manfield
Todd is on the play with Temur Twin, but will it be enough to lead him past Pro Tour Fate Reforged Top 8er Seth Manfield and U/R Twin?
Todd knows he has his work cut out for him.
Todd, on the play, was able to Spell Peirce Seth’s Serum Visions and kicked things off with a Snapcaster Mage as a 2/1 on his second main phase to apply some pressure. Todd stopped Seth in his third upkeep, going to 14 to fetch a third land and tapped the opposing Steam Vents with a Deceiver Exarch. Todd attacked for 3 and passed, leading Seth to fetch another tapped Steam Vents at the end step.
Seth played a Desolate Lighthouse and shipped the turn, prompting Todd to flash in another Exarch to tap the Lighthouse. Seth used an Exarch of his own to tap a Steam Vents of Todd’s in his upkeep, leading Todd to attack with his 1/4s, dropping Seth to 11. Todd added a fetch land to his board and passed, with Seth doing the same, but with a Tectonic Edge.
Todd attacked with his Exarchs and Seth flashed in his second Exarch, tapping a Steam Vents, and blocked both. Todd had no other effects and passed the action, leaving Seth to use the Edge to hit the Stomping Ground. Seth drew a card and played Splinter Twin on one of his Exarchs taking the game as Todd had no interaction with his remaining mana.
Seth 1, Todd 0
Seth makes one last adjustment from his sideboard.
Todd started the second game with a tapped Stomping Ground while Seth opened with a Serum Visions. Todd passed back after dropping an Island and Seth fetched a Mountain to play an Engineered Explosives for two, but Todd immediately hit it with an Ancient Grudge. Todd added a Hinterland Harbor to his mana base and Seth played another Island, leading him to stop Todd in his upkeep to attempt a Pestermite, but Todd had the Remand. Todd hit his fourth land drop and shipped the turn.
Seth replayed the Pestermite in his main phase, untapping an Island, fetched a tapped Steam Vents, and used another Serum Visions. Todd dropped a Mountain and killed the faerie with a Lightning Bolt and passed. Seth simply played a Desolate Lighthouse and passed again. Todd did the same with a Forest, but Seth flashed in a Deceiver Exarch, tapping the Harbor and Todd used it and two other lands to play his own Pestermite, untapping his Harbor.
Seth got in for one with his Exarch, dropping Todd to 19, and passed the turn after playing a Sulfur Falls. Todd swung back with his Pestermite, leading Seth to attempt to kill it with an Electrolyze, but Todd stopped it with a Dispel, dropping Seth to 16. Seth dropped Todd to 18 and shipped the turn after playing a Tectonic Edge. Todd served in with the Pestermite again, leading Seth to play a Snapcaster Mage, but Todd stopped it with a Counterflux. Todd considered his options and played a Tarmogoyf passing with just an Island open, “I’m probably dead, but I got to play it.”
Seth confirmed that he was dead, flashing a Splinter Twin, and Todd showed a hand with no interaction and extended the hand.
