Quarterfinals: Chris VanMeter vs. Van Nguyen
G/R Aggro has been the talk of the tournament and it is no surprise Chris VanMeter was one of the deck’s marquee pilots. Chris is the top seed and faces down a similar deck in the quarterfinals. Which player will be casting dragons in the semifinals?
Both players opened on a Temple of Abandon and Chris played a Sylvan Caryatid on his second turn while Van opted for another Temple. Chris kept ramping with an Elvish Mystic as Van played a Forest and passed, leading CVM to play Xenagos, the Reveler and attacked with a Satyr. Van flashed in a Boon Satyr at the end of the turn and attacked the Planeswalker, but Chris had a Draconic Roar with no reveal to take down the 4/2. Van refueled with a Thunderbreak Regent and shipped the turn back.
Chris made another Satyr and attacked with his team and Van blocked a Satyr with his dragon and Chris finished off the Regent with another Draconic Roar. Van sent the three damage from the Regent at Xengaos to kill the Planeswalker and played another Regent on his next turn. Chris took three more, going to 16, to kill the Regent with a Crater’s Claw and attacked for three with his Mystic and Satyr token, dropping Van to 12.
Van fetched a Forest, going to 11, and deployed Stormbreath Dragon, which got in for four. Van played a post-combat Elvish Mystic and passed. Chris took a look at his next draw and windmill slammed Dragonlord Atarka to clear Van’s board and sent his team into the red zone. Van peeked at his top card and decided to pick up his lands.

Van, on the play, was on six cards after a mulligan and led off with an Elvish Mystic, but Chris quickly killed it with a Wild Slash. Both players made lands drops for the next two turns and Van fetched a Forest and flashed in a Boon Satyr at the end of Chris’s third turn. Van dropped a Fanatic of Xenagos, which CVM didn’t pay tribute, but responded with the trigger on the stack by killing it with Draconic Roar, revealing a Stormbreath Dragon.
Van got in for four and passed as Chris played an Elvish Mystic and shipped the turn so he could use another Roar to kill the Satyr. Van had no play and shipped the turn, leading Chris to play a Stormbreath Dragon and attacked for four. Van made his own Stormbreath Dragon and kept it back on defense so Chris played a Courser of Kruphix and used a Crater’s Claw to kill the dragon and attack in. Van played another Stormbreath Dragon, but Chris had another Claw for it and attacked for the win.
