Quarterfinals: Chris O'Bryant vs. Richard Adams
Richard Adams rode a wave of Elemental tokens on the way to the Top 8. Christopher O'Bryant proved that Karn didn't care for all of Invitational so far. Who will get one step closer to their ticket to the Players' Championship?
Chris and Richard square off in the quarterfinals!
As our first overall seed, Chris has to privilege of playing first. After both players keep their opening seven, our quarterfinal actions starts with Chris playing an Urza's Tower and a Chromatic+Sphere. Richard starts off with an Island into Aether+Vial and both players have their preferred opening.
On his second turn, Chris cracks his Chromatic+Sphere for green mana and casts Ancient+Stirrings, finding a Oblivion+Stone, followed by playing an Expedition+Map off of a Grove+of+the+Burnwillows. Richard plays the first creature of our Top 8 with a Lord+of+Atlantis, but on Chris's turn, it meets an untimely end due to a Pyroclasm. Chris plays a Relic+of+Progenitus and pass the turn back.
Richard keeps the Lords coming, this time in the form of Merrow+Reejerey. A Mutavault and a pass of the turn. On Chris' turn, he cracks the Relic to draw a card, followed by sacrificing his Expedition+Map to find a Urza's Mine. A second Expedition+Map is played, followed by an attempt to pass the turn. But Richard has an Aether+Vial activation, putting into a play a Master+of+the+Pearl+Trident, growing his Merfolk army. A tick up on the Aether+Vial to three starts Richard's turn, and Richard activates his Mutavault, vials in another Merrow+Reejerey and attacks Chris for thirteen! Chris activates his Expedition+Map on his turn for the final Tron piece in Urza's Power Plant, but can't find an answer to the Merfolk army, and Richard wins Game 1! On to sideboards!
Richard wins Game 1 and leads the match, 1-0!
Chris will be on the play after sideboarding, hoping to find his Tron pieces a little quicker than last game. After both players keep their opening seven, Chris leads with a Urza's Power Plant into an Expedition+Map, while Richard has Island into Aether+Vial. A Ghost+Quarter from Chris and a pass, leads to a Silvergill+Adept from Richard, revealing Master+of+the+Pearl+Trident. Chris cracks his Expedition+Map at the end of Richard's turn, getting an Urza's Mine, which he plays on his turn, followed by playing a Chromatic+Star, cracking it for green mana in order to cast Sylvan+Scrying getting a Urza's Tower.
Chris adds an Ugin%2C+the+Spirit+Dragon to his board!
Richard, however, will have no part of the Tron shenanigans, however, as he casts Spreading+Seas on the Urza's Mine, followed by Vialing in a Master+of+the+Pearl+Trident, and an attack with the Silvergill+Adept. Chris plays an Oblivion+Stone, threatening to blow up the board if Richard overcommits and passes back his turn. Richard simply attacks with his two Merfolk and passes back, fearing the Oblivion+Stone activation. Chris simply plays another land and passes back. After Richard tries to attack, the O-Stone is popped, and all of Richard's creatures, Aether+Vials, and Spreading+Seas are destroyed.
Richard has another Aether+Vial and a second Spreading+Seas to try to slow Chris down, but a Sylvan+Scrying ensures that he will have an active Tron in order to cast his Karn+Liberated. Karn exiles the Aether+Vial. Richard continues to play Merfolk out, but on back-to-back turns, Chris plays an Ugin%2C+the+Spirit+Dragon and a Wurmcoil+Engine. At that point, Richard has seen enough, and we are on to Game 3!
Chris wins Game 2 and has tied the match, 1-1!
Richard will be on the play for the first time in the match, and keeps his opening seven. Chris does not like what he sees, and sends his seven back for a new six.
Richard starts his Turn 1 the same way he has been, with Island into Aether+Vial. Chris matches him with, Urza's Tower into Expedition+Map. A Mutavault and a pass of the turn is followed by an Uzra's Power Plant and a pass from Chris.
A Sea's Claim on the Tower from Richard keeps his opponent from casting big spells early, and an activate of a Mutavault along with a Vialed in Lord+of+Atlantis starts the pressure on Chris' life total. Chris gets an Urza's Mine with his Expedition+Map, plays it and a Chromatic+Sphere and a second Expedition+Map for his turn. He will not be denied his Tron!
More Fish-y tactics from Richard, as he activates both Mutavaults and swings with the team, putting Chris to single-digit life totals. But Chris has an Ugin%2C+the+Spirit+Dragon to kill off the Lord+of+Atlantis, and start to pressure Richard. Richard attacks his opponent with both Mutavaults, hoping to win the race, but Chris starts his turn with sacrificing his Expedition+Map to get a Ghost+Quarter, which he plays. He follows that up with a +2 activation of Ugin, targeting Richard.
To start his turn, Richard activates both of his Mutavaults and swings them at Ugin, hoping to keep it off of its ultimate ability. Chris Ghost+Quarters one of the Mutavaults, and Ugin takes two damage. A Spreading+Seas on the Chris' second Urza's Tower to stop his big mana production is all Richard has for this turn.
Chris uses Ugin's ability to unlock his lands by -2, and plays an Oblivion+Stone. Richard starts his turn with an activation of Mutavault and attacking Chris with both the Mutavault and a Merrow+Reejerey, but Chris has a Rending+Volley to kill the Merfolk lord. A Fate counter is added to Ugin at the end of Rich's turn, and it is Chris' turn.
Chris plays an Ancient Stirring, finding an Eye+of+Ugin. He plays it and leaves his Oblivion+Stone up. Richard once again attacks Chris with his Mutavault, followed by trying to put a Master+of+Waves into play, but an Oblivion+Stone kills it and its Elemental followers. However, the Mutavault puts Chris to one life, and after finding nothing in his draw step to deal with the Mutavault, he concedes and moves to the next game.
Richard wins Game 3, and is leading 2-1!
Both players quickly keep their opening hands, and Chris starts with an Urza's Mine and Chromatic+Sphere. Richard only has Island this time, no Aether+Vial. A crack of the Chromatic+Sphere and an Urza's Tower leaves Chris one piece short of Tron, and all Richard has a Mutavault and a pass.
Richard sends his Fish into the red zone!
Chris plays his Urza's Power Plant, but does not play a Karn+Liberated, instead playing an Expedition+Map and passing. Richard starts his Merfolk summoning with a Merrow+Reejerey and a pass. Chris goes and finds an Eye+of+Ugin with his map and plays it for his turn and passes.
And the fireworks start, as Richard goes crazy on his turn. He plays another Merrow+Reejerey, untaping an Island with the first Reejerey's trigger. He then plays a Lord+of+Atlantis, untapping both of his Islands with his two Merrow+Reejerey triggers. He then plays a second Lord+of+Atlantis, untapping both of his Islands with his two Merrow Reejery triggers. That's three Lords in one turn! An attack for five, and a pass with two Islands up. Chris gets a Wurmcoil+Engine from his Eye+of+Ugin, and attempts to cast it, but Richard has the Unified+Will to counter it. At that point, Chris can do nothing but extend his hand in defeat.
Richard wins Game 4, and the match, 3-1! Richard is on to the semifinals!
