Quarterfinals: Chris VanMeter vs. Tariq Patel
Chris and Tariq met in Round 11 for an Amulet Bloom mirror match where Tariq handed Chris his first loss in the tournament. Can Chris get revenge to move into the Top 4 or will Tariq be the only person to beat Chris in Modern this weekend?
Chris figures out his next play.
After Tariq went down to five cards, Chris opened the game with an Ancient+Stirrings off a Gemstone+Mine, finding a Boros+Garrison. Tariq also had a Mine and did some digging of his own with Serum+Visions, leading Chris to play a Tendo+Ice+Bridge and Summer+Bloom, ramping up to five mana through the Garrison and a Mana+Confluence. Tariq kept pace with a Bloom of his own, going up to four mana before firing off another Serum+Visions, hunting for another land, but came up short.
Chris played a Gruul+Turf bouncing the Bridge and passed with no other action while Tariq found his own Garrison and bounced a Mine to his hand before playing another Bloom that just let him replay the Mine. Chris hit the board first with the first Primeval+Titan of the match, getting to bounce a Tolaria+West to his hand from the trigger from Simic+Growth+Chamber. Chris passed the turn and Tariq landed a Titan of his own, getting Slayers' Stronghold and a Chamber of his own, bouncing a Mine that he replayed before passing back.
Chris opened his next turn by transmuting Tolaria+West for a Slaughter+Pact, which he used to kill Tariq's Titan, allowing Chris to attack with his Titan, fetching up another Tolaria+West that got bounced by a Goglari Rot Farm. Chris played Cavern+of+Souls on "Giant" in his second main and played a second Titan, finding two more lands, this time Sunhome%2C+Fortress+of+the+Legion and another Tolaria+West. Tariq took a draw off the top and considered his options before using a Summoner's Pact to get a Titan and play it, getting a Tolaria+West and a Chamber to get his West in hand so he could tutor up a Slaughter+Pact.
Chris paid for his Pact and attempted to transmute Tolaria+West, which Tariq responded to by killing one Titan with the Pact. Chris resolved the transmute and got a Pact+of+Negation and Tariq responded by conceding the game.
"I have no outs," Tariq said.

Both players kept their openers and Tariq led with a Temple+of+Mystery while Chris opened with a Serum+Visions off a Gemstone+Mine. Tariq had an Amulet+of+Vigor to start his next turn and a Simic+Growth+Chamber, allowing him to bounce the Temple and play Serum+Visions. Chris had his own Amulet and played a second copy of the artifact off a Cavern+of+Souls on "Giant."
"That's scary," Tariq said.
Tariq replayed the Temple and kept his scry on top before playing Serum+Visions and Summer+Bloom, which let him use Gruul+Turf and Summoner's Pact to play a Primeval+Titan, doing the hasty combo with Slayers' Stronghold and Boros+Garrison before bouncing the Stronghold, attacking and getting Tolaria+West and Ghost+Quarter. Chris fell to 12 after the attack and Tariq shipped the turn.
Chris cashed in his Mine for one last use, playing Ancient+Stirrings, finding Gruul+Turf, which he played getting four mana and bounced the Turf. Chris used two mana to play Summer+Bloom and started with a Turf that got Ghost Quartered upon its enter the battlefield trigger, allowing Chris to get a Forest, then he played Simic+Growth+Chamber after bouncing his Cavern that he floated a green with. Chris used a Summoner's Pact to get a Titan, play it, getting Ghost+Quarter and Vesuva copying Chamber, bouncing the Chamber. Chris then could replay Vesuva copying Ghost+Quarter and use his two Ghost+Quarters to destroy Tariq's lands and not let him pay the Pact upkeep trigger.

Tariq makes his move.
Both players were happy with their openers again and Tariq played a Serum+Visions off a Gemstone+Mine while Chris was able to open with Amulet+of+Vigor off Slayers' Stronghold. Tariq added a Sunhome to his board and played Summer+Bloom, getting to ramp with a Simic+Growth+Chamber, replay the Mine and use Ancient+Stirrings to get a Selesnya+Sanctuary to play and bounce the Mine.
Chris pondered before floating a colorless, playing Simic+Growth+Chamber to bounce his Stronghold, then found Azusa%2C+Lost+but+Seeking off Summoner's Pact, allowing him to play Gemstone+Mine for Ancient+Stirrings to get Ghost+Quarter, then ended his turn by replaying the Stronghold. Tariq had no Titan and settled for playing Ratchet+Bomb and transmuting Tolaria+West for Summoner's Pact.
Chris paid for his Pact, attacked with Azusa and simply played a Ghost+Quarter before passing. Tariq popped the Bomb to blow up Chris' Amulet, played his own Amulet, searched up a Titan with his Summoner's Pact and played it after using a Mana+Confluence, but Chris stopped it from resolving with a Pact+of+Negation.
Chris paid for his Pact again, battled for one with Azusa and ended his turn after adding Ghost+Quarter to his board. Tariq paid his Pact cost and was only able to drop a Gruul+Turf, bouncing a Gemstone+Mine. Chris was able to land the first Titan and tutored up a Growth Chamber and a Tolaria+West, bouncing Ghost+Quarter, replaying it and adding an Amulet to his side of the table.
Tariq replayed his previously bounced Gemstone+Mine, transmuted Tolaria+West for Summoner's Pact, which he used to get a Titan and play it, finding the haste combo, bouncing Stronghold, attacked to tutor up Tolaria+West and Golgari+Rot+Farm, bouncing the Future+Sight land. Chris decided to block the Titan with his own, but Tariq used Slaughter+Pact to kill it, getting in for eight.
Chris untapped with his Amulet, played Titan, getting Boros+Garrison and Simic+Growth+Chamber, giving his Titan haste then returning Tolaria+West and Gruul+Turf to his hand. Chris transmuted Tolaria+West to get his own Slaughter+Pact, played Turf, Ghost+Quarter, and Cavern+of+Souls for his lands, killed the Titan, found Sunhome and Vesuva to deal lethal damage for the win.
