Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 18 or more points made Day 2, meaning 104 players would return to battle for a shot at the Top 8 of the Standard Open at #SCGINDY.
G/R Devotion continues to be the most popular deck in Standard, with seventeen copies making Day 2. G/R Devotion started to pick up steam as a way to fight past the controlling version of Abzan and Esper, and with their ability to play haymakers like Dragonlord Atarka and large Genesis Hydras, the deck continues to shine in Standard.
However, the biggest surprise for the weekend is the amount of Mardu Dragons that have made Day 2. Our second most popular archetype, with fourteen copies, has the right tools to fight G/R Devotion, with Crackling Doom taking care of the huge threats that the devotion deck is capable of casting. Constant pressure with Stormbreath Dragon and Thunderbreak Regent are backed up with the best removal in the format, and the strategy seems to be quite potent in this current Standard metagame.
Finally, some Standard staples round out our most popular archetypes. Esper Dragons, the control deck featuring Dragonlord Ojutai and Dig Through Time, is the third most popular deck, with thirteen players in Day 2. On the other side of the Magic archetype spectrum, the hyper-aggressive Atarka Red is close behind, with eleven copies. Finally, both flavors of Abzan, Aggro and Megamorph, have a respective nine and eight copies in the Day 2 field of #SCGINDY.
