Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 18 points or more made Day 2 of #SCGRICH, meaning that 79 players returned to battle for a spot in our Top 8 at the Standard Open! With Magic Origins being a week old and the results from #SCGCHI having a marked impact on the format, it seems that the old guard has stayed the same, with Abzan Control and G/R Devotion continuing their dominance of the Standard metagame.
Abzan Control has always been a popular choice on the Open Series, and continues to do so with the new cards it received from Magic Origins. Languish is a sweeper effect seemingly built for Abzan Control, as it is four mana and leaves Siege Rhinos around to continue trampling over their opponents. Furthermore, Nissa, Vastwood Seer has become a potent threat in both the mid and late game, stretching Abzan Control's opponents even further when trying to deal with the various threats the deck can pose.
The new kid on the block this week is Sultai Control. Adding green to the classic U/B Control shell has allowed several players to get an edge up on certain aspects of the metagame. Sultai Charm is a versatile answer to many of the problems that face classic U/B Control, especially enchantments and creatures like Gaea's Revenge. With the addition of Jace, Vryn Prodigy and Nissa, Vastwood Seer, the deck has the ability to grind out small advantages over time, until it simply buries its opponent with those advantages.
