Top 5 Players of the Weekend
Learn more about five players who put up a great weekend through a high finish, interesting deck, or memorable moment.
5. Eric Hawkins
Eric came into this weekend as No. 6 on the #SCGPC leaderboard and looking to build on that. After a strong start of 10-1 with Grixis Twin, Eric ran into the Todd Anderson buzz saw and faltered down the stretch. Eric wasn't able to draw in the final round and lost his match against Devin Eckard, ending up in 11th place. Though he missed Top 8, Eric still managed to collect eight Open Series points for his work on the weekend. Check out Eric's Grixis Twin list here.
4. Adam Bowman
Merfolk was the most represented tribal strategy this weekend, but the most hyped was Adam's Collected Company-fueled Slivers build. After a late registration to the tournament started him with a match loss, Adam carved up Day 1 with an 8-1 record. Adam continued his winning ways on Day 2 winning four more matches, including his on-camera win-and-in from Round 15 to make the Top 8 as the eighth seed. While Adam didn't have the tools to deal with Infect and dropped a quick match to Todd Anderson in the quarterfinals, his deck was the talk of the tournament. Check out Adam's Deck Tech here.
3. Alex Hon
Merfolk has been on an uptick in Modern and Alex represented the deck in the Top 8, being the only player in 10 on Day 2 to reach the elimination rounds with it. While Alex loss to the eventual champion in the semifinals he did put up another strong showing for the tribal strategy and made his fourth Open Series Top 8. The fourth seed won a close match against Drew Gifford and Affinity in the quarterfinals before running into Todd. Check out Alex's Merfolk list here.
2. Tyler Hill
While Tyler is a stranger to the Open Series, he is no stranger to Modern Infect, playing the deck to a Top-16 finish at Pro Tour Fate Reforged. The Ann Arbor, MI Modern specialist fell one game short of taking the title this weekend, falling to Todd Anderson in the Infect mirror as the lower seed. While Affinity, Jund, and Merfolk dominated the tournament, taking up the majority of the top decks on Day 2, Tyler and Todd were two of three players in Day 2 with Infect – the third being Tom Ross. Check out Tyler's Infect list here.
A win meant more for Todd than just a sixth Open Series championship trophy. On top of becoming the winningest player in Open Series history and upping his Top 8 number to 23, Todd's victory will vault him up the #SCGPC leaderboard, most likely climbing into the Top 5. Put simply, Todd Crushed this tournament. He only took a single loss in the Swiss and rode his top seed in the Top 8 to victory, showing the power of the Infect deck he and Tom Ross tuned for the weekend.
