Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 18 points made Day 2 of #SCGMKE, meaning there are 96 players with a shot at title. With it being the last weekend where Theros Block and M15 are legal, most players decided to bring out their brews, in order to get one last chance to play some of their pet cards. However, that didn't stop Siege Rhino.
Your most popular archetypes of Day 2 should come as no surprise to those following Standard for the last year – Abzan Aggro. With fourteen players wielding it for Day 2, it has been a consistent force in the metagame, using their efficient creatures to put pressure on their opponent's life total as quickly as possible. After Andrew Boswell's amazing article on the archetype, it is no wonder so many players decided to sleeve up Fleecemane Lions one last time to try to win a championship.
Only one player less decided to go the control route with Abzan, as thirteen players played Abzan Control to a record of 7-2 or better to make Day 2. A staple in the metagame for as long as Siege Rhino has been legal, this powerful archetype is looking to have the last hoorah before many of its powerful cards, like Elspeth's Sun Champion and Thoughtseize, rotate out of Standard.
Finally, many players decided to just light their opponents up, as thirteen players played Mono-Red Aggro successfully into Day 2. With variants of the deck winning the last two Pro Tours, the quick and deadly deck will be losing some of its tools in rotation, such as Stoke the Flames and Lightning Strike, but is always a potential threat, waiting to strike in a new metagame.
