Top 5 Players of the Week
Top 5 Players of the Weekend
5. Michael Bernat
Michael Bernat is no stranger to success on the StarCityGames.com® Open Series. His finish at #SCGMKE marks his sixth overall Top 8, taking U/W Control all the way to a Quarterfinals finish. Although he lost there to Sam Braatz in a control mirror, he has definitely earned a spot in this week's Top 5 Players of the Weekend. Check out Michael Bernat's U/W Control list!
It should come as no surprise that Jasper Johnson-Epstein came to #SCGMKE with Mono-Red Aggro. After coming off a Top 8 finish with Burn at GP Oklahoma City in Modern, Jasper has shown his mastery at slinging red spells at his opponent's face, and he brought that mastery to Standard. Ultimately, it was those red burn spells that did him in, losing in the semifinals to Jory White in the Mono-Red Aggro mirror match. But all aspiring Red mages should keep an eye on Jasper in the future! Check out Jasper Johnson-Epstein's Mono-Red Aggro list!
3. Jim Davis
If there is anyone that's going to miss Elspeth, Sun's Champion, it's going to be Jim Davis. Putting up many Top 8 finishes with the popular Planeswalker, Jim Davis had one last one left in him, making the Top 8 of #SCGMKE. While falling in the semifinals to Sam Braatz's innovative Sultai Control deck, Jim definitely made Elspeth proud with his U/W Control list. Check it out here!
2. Sam Braatz
The last weekend of a format leads to many people deciding to play beloved cards that are rotating out, and Sam Braatz is no exception to this rule. Sam put together a Sultai Control deck that utilizes several Standard cards that are on the way out, including Satyr Wayfinder, Thoughtseize, Garruk, Apex Predator, and Void Snare. While Void Snare may not have been a Standard staple, it does interact nicely with Demonic Pact, a card that makes Sam's brew stand out above most. Just falling short in the finals, his deck shows that even in the last week of a format, it pays off to be innovative. Check out Sam Braatz's Sultai Control list!
1. Jory White
Jory White showed his skill in playing Mono-Red Aggro all weekend long. Not only did he win the whole tournament, but he beat Jasper Johnson-Epstein in the Mono-Red Aggro mirror on-camera twice to get there! Jory ran hot all weekend, but not nearly as hot as the fire he was casting at his opponent's face. Jory winning puts a perfect bookend on the format, as the first Standard Open after the release of Theros was also won by Mono-Red Aggro. Check out Jory White's Mono-Red Aggro list!
