Top 5 Players of the Weekend
Learn more about five players who put up a great weekend through a high finish, interesting deck, or memorable moment.
5. Aaron Barich
Aaron's tournament began poorly, dropping the first round of the Swiss before rattling off seven straight wins. Aaron entered Day at 7-2 and was able to draw into the Top 8 with IDs with Tom Ross and Christopher Thomas in Rounds 14 and 15, respectively. Aaron is no stranger to multi-colored beatdown decks, but took a different spin this weekend with Jeskai Black, opting to play a more controlling build to counter Jeskai and Megamorph strategies. Aaron's run ended with a loss to Todd Anderson in the quarterfinals. Check out Aaron's Jeskai Black decklist here.
4. Bradley Carpenter
Bradley made the Top 8 of #SCGINDY last weekend with Abzan Control, but lost to eventual runner-up Michael Majors on G/W Megamorph. Brad saw enough from his match against Michael to adopt the deck and crushed the Swiss this weekend in Atlanta. Brad ran his record up to 12-0 before taking his first loss and cruised into the Top 8 as the second seed behind Tom Ross. Unfortunately, Brad's run ended in the same round as last week's, losing to friend and eventual champion, Jacob lively in the quarterfinals. Check out Brad's G/W Megamorph decklist here.
3. Tom Ross
Tom wasn't satisfied with his Top-16 finish in #SCGINDY with Abzan Aggro, so The Boss switched to a Bant Megamorph deck based off what Michael Majors played in Indianapolis. The switch turned out great for Tom as he annihilated the Swiss, taking the top seed into the Top 8. While the blue splash helped the deck in most matchups, it didn't work as well against G/W Megamorph. Tom lost to Christopher Thomas in the quarterfinals, where the sleek build of G/W was better in the semi-mirror. While his sixth Open Top 8 ended in the quarterfinals, Tom did secure 10 more Open points to help him in his hunt to get back to the Players' Championship. While many players brought Jeskai Black to the Open this weekend, Todd showed up with a more aggressive build of the most popular deck on Day 2, using Seeker of the Way and Monastery Mentor to his advantage. Todd clinched his spot in the Top 8 in Round 15, winning a Jeskai Black mirror that earned him another one, this time with Aaron Barich. Todd showed his prowess, winning that match as well to get to the semifinals. Todd's tournament ended there, however, as he was unable to prevent a G/W Megamoprh showdown in the finals. While Todd missed out on his chance to win two Opens in two months, he did collect 15 Open points to push him into the Top 3 of the #SCGPC leaderboard. Check out Todd's Jeskai Black decklist here.
1. Jacob Lively
The Top 8 of #SCGATL had four Jeskai decks and four Megamorph decks, but only one archetype could be the winner and Jacob made it G/W Megamorph. Jacob navigated through a finals mirror match, winning the third and final game on a mulligan to five, riding Hangarback Walker and Warden of the First Tree to victory. As the seventh seed in the Top 8, Jacob pulled upsets in the quarters and semis before taking out the eighth seed, Christopher Thomas in the finals. After a long weekend, Jacob made the most out of his trip up from Florida to hoist the trophy. Check out Jacob's winning G/W Megamorph decklist here.
