Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with 18 or more points made Day 2 of #SCGSTL, meaning 108 players came back to fight it out for a chance at our Top 8. The banning of Dig Through Time led many to believe that there would be a big shift within the Legacy metagame, and #SCGSTL seems to have proven them correctly. Now that decks cannot make up for resources lost with a single spell, we have seen the rise of attrition-based decks as the "deck to beat." Shardless Sultai is the epitome of an attrition-based deck, with its spells and creatures providing card advantage to go along with powerful disruption effects. Creatures like Baleful Strix and Shardless Agent provide an inherent two-for-one effect, and spells such as Hymn to Tourach and Toxic Deluge put your opponent down on resources, now that they can't just delve away their graveyard for more cards. The addition of Jace, Vryn's Prodigy along with the banning of Dig Through Time has put this deck at the top of Legacy.
Even though it lost Dig Through Time, Miracles is still a powerful deck. With ability to turn the corner with Monastery Mentor and lock out most decks with Counterbalance + Sensei's Divining Top, Miracles is still a force to be reckoned with.
Finally, we see the resurgence of Storm decks, thanks to the lack of pure card draw in Legacy. Whether it is the Ad Nauseam + Tendrils of Agony version of the deck or the Rite of Flame + Burning Wish variety, Storm has once again struck fear into the hearts of Legacy players everywhere. With Delver decks on the downswing, look for Storm to keep Legacy "honest" for some time to come.
