Day 2 Metagame Breakdown
All players with a record of 6-2-1 or better made Day 2 at #SCGCOL, meaning 68 players returned with a shot to Top 8.
Four-Color Rally is the most popular archetype for our Day 2 players, with thirteen pilots. The powerful, synergistic deck has added cards like Reflector Mage to its arsenal of value creatures, further improving its power level. Even with plenty of players packing sideboard (and main deck) hate in the form of Anafenza, the Foremost, Hallowed Moonlight, and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, the Rally deck keeps putting up good numbers, making many players realize that if you can't beat the deck, you might as well Rally with them.
Mardu Green is the second most popular archetype, with eight pilots. With powerful Mardu staples, like Crackling Doom, Kolaghan's Command, and the new Goblin Dark-Dwellers, along with a splash of green for Siege Rhino and the occasional Abzan Charm or Den Protector, the midrange deck du jour seems to be Mardu Green. I'm sure with eight pilots in Day 2, there is a good chance we will see #MarduGuy make a run at the Top 8 and championship.
Perhaps more notable than what is at the top of the list of popular archetypes is what is towards the bottom. Atarka Red, the winning deck from last week's #SCGATL, has only two pilots that made Day 2. While it is not unusual for more people to pack hate for aggressive red strategies after they win, it is unusual to see that there were so few new pilots. It seems players with an aggressive bent gravitated towards B/R Dragons this week, with seven pilots in Day 2. So if you're looking to beat down with red creatures, try taking to the skies for success.
