Deck Tech: Nic Fit with Chris Higashi
Day two in Phoenix, what is the best way to win a legacy event? Cast Titans. Chris Higashi’s build of Nic Fit has him on the fringe a possible top eight. Nic Fit is a list out of Europe that is designed to beat the Maverick and Rug Delver lists. Chris was interested because of the consistent high finishes.
Chris Higashi lords over his Nic Fit deck.
The deck is a Rock/Toolbox deck, either with white for the Swords to Plowshare and Sun+Titan or red to utilize Huntmaster+of+the+Fells. Chris went for the white plan for the interaction between Sun+Titan and Pernicious+Deed. With most of the format having converted mana cost of 3 or less, Deed is back breaking once, and multiple times is game ending.
Today he has been a huge fan of Veteran+Explorer. Many decks are very light on basic land opponents don’t want to block. The Explorer nibbles away life setting up for a Thrun or a Titan to finish the game out. Veteran also provides great fuel to Cabal+Therapy. Having experience with Cabal+Therapy has allowed him to blindly name and hit.
Chris is happy with his overall list. Garruk%2C+Primal+Hunter has been an easy card to board out each mach, he wanted another non-creature threat and just like in standard if it resolves the presence is felt. Chris would have liked to add one more Recurring+Nightmare. Again with Sun+Titan and Eternal Witness the board presence is felt immediately because of the synergy with Recurring+Nightmare. The more you look at this deck the more you need to ponder how to play it. Within this deck there is not just one singular linear idea. Each one of land and enchantment provides another way to get a unique advantage not a build to just pick up and play.
Overall this deck is very entertaining. This is a list where you have to sit down get some games in and figure if will work for you. This deck has plenty of “new” old cards that people have not seen in a few years. It has not been floating around the Web or MOTO Chris is exited that after this event it will be. Phoenix still has a top eight, the question now is how much impact will Nic Fit bring to the Open Series as we move forward?
