Deck Tech: StoneStill with David Patwell
David's Stoneforge Mystic landed--success!
Stoneforge Mystic and Standstill is not an unexplored synergy in Legacy. When Mental Misstep first hit the fan, it quickly became one of the central interactions of the format! Being able to present threats with the enchantment in play a la Aether Vial is very powerful... but what if you jammed the deck with more of these threats?
That's what David has certainly done here! Not only is David running a lot of equipment—making his Mystics stronger than expected due to the increased frequency of naturally drawn equipment and the additional cards he'll be able to reap in a long game—but he's added another color for some additional power.
Grim Lavamancer can keep down Delver of Secrets and shrink Tarmogoyfs, in addition to presenting a threatening clock under Standstill. He's an ideal creature in Maverick-dominated metagames and has significant game against RUG Delver as well, although Nimble Mongoose is a tough cookie. With Grim flanking his manlands, David can win most fights underneath Standstill. Of all the cards in this deck, the 1/1 Wizard is the most interesting to me.
In addition to putting a threat into play and using Standstill to protect it, David's running a package of flash creatures that can fulfill the same role. Spellstutter Sprite and Vendilion Clique have a fair bit of game text at instant speed, and untapping into Standstill with either Faeries is a heavy blow. A Vendilion on the end step can also be nicely protected by turn 4 Standstill with Spellstutter to back it up!
One downside to the additional color has been a weakening of the manabase. With many less basics and an increased reliance on blue duals, cards like Choke and Wasteland are more significant threats. On the upside, red and blue gives David access to both flavors of Blasts and thus grants him a major leg up against the various blue and red decks in the format! While David's not running it, access to a card like Sulfur Elemental can really change the math in some of these matchups, such as against Maverick and Esper Stoneblade.
