Deck Tech: U/W Control with Scotty Kelley
Texas native Scotty Kelley is showing that U/W Control still has what it takes in Standard.
It’s often the case in Magic that an idea is planted somewhere and then left to rot in dusty web archives and deck databases around the internet no matter how good the idea was. Sometimes, however, Christopher Nolan takes that idea and turns it into a psychological thriller featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. Texas native Scotty Kelley is doing his best Inception impersonation this weekend, turning an idea Ali Aintrazi wrote about this week into a full-fledged winner.
Ali’s article about Trinket Mage included a unique take on U/W Control, a deck that hasn’t seen much play at all this season, falling to the wayside as U/B and Esper Control variants have shot up in popularity and success. Focusing on Trinket Mage finding some great silver bullets, the rest of Ali’s shell was built to withstand an army of beaters with a high-volume of maindeck Timely Reinforcements, Day of Judgment, Batterskull and a full complement of Pristine Talisman. Scotty’ tuning landed him on an amazingly well-positioned list for the aggressively-slanted metagame here in Fort Worth, and he’s capitalized on it to the tune of a 5-0-1 record after beating up on Zombies, R/G Aggro and Humans with the renewed Drogskol Reaver.
The maligned mythic puts the finishing touches on the heavy life gain theme of the deck and creates an imposing roadblock for any deck to overcome, drawing a ton of cards and gaining a ton of life if not dealt with immediately. More subtle is his matchup against the control-eating popular and powerful U/B Control deck, in which Elixir of Immortality helps keep the U/B deck from winning with Nephalia Drownyard, and Buried Ruin and Sun Titan make sure the little artifact sticks, even if it gets milled. After board, the life gain turns into a lethal threat with the incredibly hard to deal with Chalice of Life.
With a full host of powerful cards, great matchups against the aggressive decks and the tools to handle Frites and U/B Control, this deck looks like a true contender and Scotty Kelley is here to prove it!
