Finals: Andy Boswell vs. Dan Jessup
Andy Boswell had tuned his G/W Aggro deck to beat Black Devotion decks, and it had paid off in spades. His finals opponent Dan Jessup was playing Mono-Black Devotion, and couldn’t have felt like much of an underdog with the power of Thoughtseize and Pack Rat at his disposal.
Andy keeps his cool.
Andy had Temple of Plenty on turn 1, but two threats on his second turn, casting Experiment One and then Soldier of the Pantheon to evolve it. When he attempted a Fleecemane Lion on turn 3, Dan used Ultimate Price to kill the Experiment One, but fell to 18 from the Soldier. He had Hero’s Downfall next to dispose of the Lion, but Andy simply replaced it with another from his hand, and attacked Dan down to 16. Dan had a Pack Rat on his turn 4 as well as a Bile Blight, killing off the other Fleecemane Lion. Andy simply attacked and passed, appearing to give Dan a window to stabilize.
With his fifth land, Dan was able to play a second Pack Rat from his hand and leave up mana to activate it for a third. He got in one attack for 3, and passed with two 3/3 blockers. Andy flashed in Boon Satyr at Dan’s end step, then cleared away one Rat with Banishing Light before attacking Dan down to 8. Dan had a Gray Merchant of Asphodel on his own turn to swing things back into his favor, jumping back up to 12, then playing and activating Mutavault to grow his Pack Rats and swing for 6.
With his Mana Confluences rapidly depleting his life total, Andy’s back was against the wall. He cast a Voice of Resurgence and another Soldier of the Pantheon, but was forced to chump block with all of his creatures on Dan’s next attack. Out of gas in the aftermath, Andy could only survive one more turn before he fell to the Pack Rat army.

Dan considers his options.
It was a strange start to the game for Andy, who didn’t have a play on his first three turns. Dan was first to the board with a turn 2 Pack Rat. When it attacked on turn 3, Andy flashed in Boon Satyr, but Dan was ready with Pharika’s Cure. Andy untapped and cast Experiment One followed by Loxodon Smiter to evolve it.
Dan spent the next two turns casting removal spell rather than activating his Pack Rat. He had Bile Blight for the Experiment One, then Ultimate Price to answer Andy’s Advent of the Wurm. Andy used Ajani, Caller of the Pride to make his Loxodon Smiter a 5/5, and swung across dropping Dan to 13. Dan untapped and cast Desecration Demon, but Andy was ready with Banishing Light. The Smiter grew to 6/6 and attacked Dan to 7.
Dan found his fifth land, which allowed him to make a Pack Rat and attack Ajani down to 3 loyalty, and spend his last two mana on Devour Flesh to clear away the Smiter. Andy simply drew his card, upticked Ajani, and passed. Dan attacked away the Ajani and played Gray Merchant of Asphodel, jumping back up to 11 and seemingly turning the game around. Andy had no play on his next turn, and didn’t find another draw step, as the Rat army was able to finish him off.
