Finals: Anthony Wilson vs. James Allen
James shuffles up against an unknown quantity--Affinity.
It's been a while since a Legacy Open final featured two decks this aggressive, but Affinity and Burn are only a step away from combo decks on the speed spectrum. The Stoneblade and Delver decks had fallen by the wayside, and all that remained were two decks looking to goldfish turn 4 kills using the red zone—plus or minus a few Lightning Bolts.
On the play, James already had a leg up that even Anthony admitted. These two decks weren't looking to interact much—it would be a straight race for the most part, each player going for the other's life total as aggressively as possible. Goblin Guide revealed Thoughtcast and got the part started for James.
Inkmoth Nexus and Springleaf Drum on Anthony's side weren't as aggressive, and James sent for 2 damage again, showing Stoneforge Mystic. Another Mountain, and Lava Spike followed by Chain Lightning put Anthony down to 10 life, already halfway dead. Drawing Ornithopter, Anthony cast it to play Glimpse of Nature, followed by another Ornithopter, Signal Pest, and then Glimmervoid, casting Thoughtcast.
Revealing Frogmite to Goblin Guide, Anthony chumped with an 0/2. Chain Lightning put Anthony to 7, and James passed with two Mountains untapped. Playing Inkmoth Nexus, Anthony cast Stoneforge Mystic to search his library for Cranial Plating, casting Vault Skirge. During the end step, James declined to cast Price of Progress and deal Anthony 6 damage, untapping.
Fireblast off the top locked it up.
Anthony Wilson made the transition from alterist to Open Series Top 8 competitor this weekend!
James 1, Anthony 0
Anthony kept, as did James, and Anthony began with turn 1 Vault Skirge off Ancient Den. James had Lightning Bolt at the ready, killing the 1/1 and passing the turn. Stoneforge Mystic followed on turn 2 via Plains, searching for Cranial Plating as Anthony ended the turn. James just cast Keldon Marauders.
A Springleaf Drum for Anthony, followed by a second Drum… followed by tapping Stoneforge for a third Drum, flooding the board with artifacts. James cast Hellspark Elemental and attacked with the Marauders as well, getting in 6 damage and putting Anthony to 11 on turn 3—kind of slow, really.
Thoughtcast drew Anthony two cards after he played Frogmite for Springleaf Drum, and another Frogmite followed. Stoneforge Mystic picked up the Plating, and an attack for a bunch of damage didn't matter—James revealed a Lightning Bolt, Flame Rift, and Fireblast to easily blast Anthony to death.
