Finals: Bob Huang vs. Jake Moldowsky
Bob Huang had a feeling about Treasure Cruise, and he packed his deck with the full 4, and now sat in the finals with his inventive take on U/R Delver. Standing between him and a trophy was Jake Moldowsky, who hoped to ride Reanimator to victory.
Bob lays it all out there.
Delver of Secrets got the party started for Bob, while Jake led off with a Lotus Petal as insurance from Daze and then a Ponder. Bob missed on his turn 2 attempt to flip the Delver, but fired off a Brainstorm to set it up for the next turn, then poked for one, played a Flooded Strand, and passed. Jake attempted Entomb on his next turn. Bob pitched Treasure Cruise to cast Force of Will, and Jake pitched Brainstorm to Force right back. The Entomb resolved, putting Griselbrand into Jake’s graveyard, but Bob had Daze when Jake attempted to bring it back with Exhume.
The Delver flip missed again, and when Bob attempted to bolster his forces with a Young Pyromancer, Jake had a Daze. Jake had no play on his next turn, however, and shipped it right back. Bob’s Delver revealed Treasure Cruise on his upkeep, and the Insectile Aberration came out to play. Bob counted up his graveyard, finding 6 cards, meaning his Treasure Cruise wasn’t QUITE a full blown Ancestral Recall.
Bob: “I have to pay two for this card? What a rip-off.”
He fired it off just the same. He then cast Gitaxian Probe, seeing Ponder and Underground Sea, and attacked with his 3/2. Jake cast the Ponder on his next turn, but found no further plays, and passed it back to Bob, who began filling back up his graveyard with more cantrips and fetchlands. He Brainstormed, then Pondered, then added a second Delver of Secrets to his board.
After Jake again drew and passed without a play, Bob revealed a Lightning Bolt on top to flip up the second Insectile Aberration. He cracked a fetchland in his upkeep to shuffle it away, and found Monastery Swiftspear instead. He played it, attacked for 7, and passed, waiting to see if Jake could re-assemble his reanimation combo in the one turn window.

Bob's gonna need a bigger boat.
Thoughtseize on turn 1 from Jake revealed Lightning Bolt, Pyroblast, Daze, two Force of Wills, and a Scalding Tarn in Bob’s hand. Bob lost the Pyroblast, but promptly found a Monastery Swiftspear, and cracked in for 1. Jake had a Ponder on turn 2, but no forther play, and the Monastery Swiftspear got in for a 2 point poke with some help from Lightning Bolt, dropping Jake to 14. He played his freshly drawn Flooded Strand and passed.
Jake Brainstormed, played a Lotus Petal, and passed back, laying in wait in the face of Bob’s countermagic. When Bob drew and cast Brainstorm on his own turn, Jake responded with an Entomb, but Force of Will pitching Daze kept it from resolving. The Monastery Swiftspear attacked for 3, and Bob passed with Treasure Cruise and Force of Will in hand.
A Thoughtseize from Jake cleared away the Treasure Cruise, leaving a lonely uncastable Force of Will, and Jake saw that the way was clear. He cast Entomb for Griselbrand, then tapped out for Exhume, plopping the 7/7 Lifelinker into play. Bob could make no play on his next turn, and Jake wasted no time getting in for 7, jumping back up to 14 life. Within another turn, Bob had seen enough, and it was on to game 3.

Bob led off with Delver of Secrets in the decider, and Jake’s turn 1 Thoughtseize was met with a Daze. a second Delver of Secrets joined the party on Bob’s second turn, and the first poked in for 1. Jake had a turn 2 Brainstorm, which found him a land drop, but no further play. He passed to Bob, who revealed a Ponder to send his creatures to the air. The duo of Insectile Aberrations dropped Jake to 13, and Bob Pondered then passed the turn.
An Entomb in Jake’s upkeep resolved, and fetched up a Griselbrand. He then played Bayou and attempted Reanimate, but Bob had a Daze to put a stop to that plan. The 3/2s came swinging again, dropping Jake to 6, and Bob replayed his Volcanic Island and passed back. This time Jake tried Exhume. Bob fired off Brainstorm, but found no countermagic, and the Griselbrand entered play.
Now with his back against the wall, Bob began calculating, trying to find a way around the 7/7 lifelinking wall. Ultimately he decided to cast Young Pyromancer and then Gitaxian Probe. He saw two more Griselbrands and a Reanimate in Jake’s hand, then passed the turn with 9 power in play. Jake, for his part, simply attacked on his turn, bringing Bob down to 9 and himself back up to 13.
Bob drew Monastery Swiftspear andbegan calculating some more, as he would need to cast 4 non-creature spells to have a lethal attack with all of his creatures. He cast the Swiftspear, then exiled his graveyard to cast Treasure Cruise, which resolved. It didn’t find him a free spell or a burn spell, but he did have a Ponder left over, which he cast. Out of mana, he was content to attack Jake down to 1 and pass.
It was now Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite or bust for Jake. He attacked with his Griselbrand to go up to 8, then immediately went back down to 1 to draw a fresh seven. He found a Brainstorm and cast it, and the Brainstorm found him Entomb, which he cast and put Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite into play. He then Pondered, looking for the miracle Exhume.
He checked his 3 and found no help. He shuffled, drew his card, and extended the hand.
