Finals: Dan Jordan vs. Levi Teitz
It was a U/W/R Delver mirror in the finals here in Worcester. Would Dan Jordan pick up his fourth trophy, or would the newcomer Levi Teitz make his mark on the Open Series?
Levi is a man of many Wastelands.
The match got off to a peculiar start, as the first three turn cycles looked exactly the same: Dan would play a Tundra, and Levi would Wasteland it. On the third Wasteland, Dan responded with a Brainstorm. His fourth land, a Flooded Strand, fetched up the fourth Tundra, and Dan began the game in earnest with a Delver of Secrets.
Levi fetched up a Volcanic Island and attempted to Lightning Bolt the Delver of Secrets. Dan thought for a moment before bouncing his one land to cast Daze, and Levi bounced his own land to Daze right back. Levi passed the turn, neither player with a permanent in play. Dan fired off Gitaxian Probe to see a hand of Delver of Secrets, Ponder, Spell Pierce, True-Name Nemesis, Batterskull, and Volcanic Island, then replayed his Tundra and passed.
Levi had a Ponder on his own turn, then Dan went for a big play with a Stoneforge Mystic. It resolved uncontested, and Batterskull went to Dan’s hand. Levi untapped and attempted to Swords to Plowshares the Stoneforge Mystic, and a flurry of countermagic arrived from both sides. Dan attempted a Force of Will, Levi countered with Spell Pierce, and Dan had Daze to push it through. When it was all over, Levi passed the turn, and Dan got to untap with an active Stoneforge Mystic still in play.
With no way to stop Dan’s Stoneforge Mystic from activating, Levi simply matched him with a Stoneforge Mystic of his own, retrieving Umezawa’s Jitte, and Batterskull predictably jumped into play at his end step. Dan untapped, attacked with his Germ token, then cast another Stoneforge Mystic, grabbing his own Jitte. He wastelanded Levi’s one white source before passing back.
When Levi had no land, simply passing back with a Stoneforge Mystic and a Volcanic Island in play, Dan looked to be in a commanding position. He attacked with her Germ, and Levi chump blocked with his Stoneforge Mystic. Dan simply played his third land and passed, and Levi used Lightning Bolt at his end step to finish off the Germ token. He untapped and went for a Ponder, but still found no second land. Dan snuck the Jitte into play, untapped, and equipped it to one of his Stoneforge Mystics, bashing Levi down to 12.
Gitaxian Probe from Dan revealed Levi’s hand: Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, True Name Nemesis, Umezawa’s Jitte, Batterskull, and a pair of Delver of Secrets. He attacked for four, using one Jitte charge, and passed. At Dan’s end step, the unequipped Stoneforge fell to a Lightning Bolt, but Levi untapped and played his Delver of Secrets. The Jitte mowed it down, and Dan untapped, swung for 5, and showed Lightning Bolt to close out the game.

Dan's Batterskull batters some skulls.
After Levi led with land and passed, A Gitaxian Probe from Dan revealed the goods: Spell Pierce, Vendilion Clique, True-Name Nemesis, Wear/Tear, Wasteland, and Tundra. Dan simply played a Polluted Delta and shipped the turn. Levi drew a Stoneforge Mystic and quickly cast it. It resolved, and Levi found a Batterskull. Dan fetched up a Volcanic Island at his end step and fried the Stoneforge Mystic with a Lightning Bolt.
Both players simply played their lands and passed over the next turn cycle, and the next play came from Levi on Dan’s third draw step, as he attempted a Vendilion Clique. Dan Dazed it, then replayed his land and passed. Levi next attempted a True-Name Nemesis. Dan had Pyroblast, Levi fought back with Spell Pierce, and Dan had a Daze to keep the True-Name out of play.
After a few more rounds of draw-go on both sides, Levi tapped out for a Batterskull. It resolved, but Dan had Wear/Tear at the end step to send it to the graveyard. Dan Brainstormed, then had Stoneforge Mystic fetching up Batterskull to shuffle away the chaff. An end step Swords to Plowshares exiled the Stoneforge Mystic, but Dan had a replacement on his next turn, this time grabbing Umezawa’s Jitte. It too was sent to the farm with a Swords to Plowshares, and Dan simply passed the turn with a hand full of removal and equipment.
True-Name Nemesis arrived for Levi, and Dan had no answer. He did draw a Delver of Secrets on his own turn, and cast it as well as a Brainstorm before passing. Levi attacked Dan to 14 with the True-Name Nemesis and passed back. Dan revealed a Swords to Plowshares on top of his deck to allow his Delver to take to the skies, but cracked a fetchland to shuffle away the Swords before drawing it. His draw for the turn ended up being another Stoneforge Mystic, which fetched up the same Batterskull he had just shuffled away. Dan attacked Levi down to 16 and passed.
Levi sent his unblockable 3/1 into the red zone again, and Dan fell to 10. He Wastelanded away Dan’s white sources, and passed the turn. Dan had another on his own turn, however, and cast another Delver of Secrets before passing the turn. The True-Name dropped him to 6, and when Levi passed back, Dan put a Batterskull into play with his Stoneforge Mystic. Levi had Wear/Tear to immediately destroy it.
Dan missed on his Delver trigger, seeing only a Flooded Strand. He considered his options before casting Umezawa’s Jitte. Levi had Daze, and Dan paid 1, leaving him with just a Flooded Strand untapped. He attacked Levi to 8 and passed. Levi eagerly attacked Dan down to 3 with his True-Name and attempted a Lightning Bolt for the win. Dan fetched up Tundra and cast Swords to Plowshares on his Insectile Aberration, gaining 3 life. It resolved!
With a new lease on life, Dan untapped, equipped the Jitte to his Stoneforge Mystic, and knocked Levi down to 4, gaining two charge counters. Levi simply attacked, and Dan used a Jitte counter to stay alive. He untapped, attacked for the win, and Levi extended the hand.
