Finals: Daniel Choi vs. Konan Ahmed
In a departure from the previous matches, Daniel Choi and Konan Ahmed chatted with each other as they prepared to play the final match of the Standard Open.
Arc Trail fell from the sky and wiped out both of the white creatures, allowing Grim Lavamancer to get in for one. Gideon’s Lawkeeper was the next to try to hold the fort, but Konan chose not to block an attacking Grim Lavamancer with it. That enabled a bloodthirsty Stormblood Berserker with Spikeshot Elder riding shotgun.
Konan again missed on land, and he passed the turn before tapping Stormblood Berserker on before Daniel attacked. Grim Lavamancer and Spikeshot Elder attacked and the goblin shot the tapper. A second Grim Lavamancer joined the team as Daniel completed his turn.
A Glacial Fortress let Konan play Honor of the Pure, but with no creatures in play against a mounting army, things were looking less than good. Daniel’s next attack knocked Konan down to 10 before he played Shrine of Burning Rage.
A third land brought Fiend Hunter with it, knocking the berserker out of commission, but Daniel didn’t seem to mind. He pointed Incinerate at Konan’s face and Konan fell to 7. The shrine moved up to two on upkeep, and Arc Trail plus Grim Lavamancer finished of the Fiend Hunter. When Daniel attacked for two, Konan saw the writing on the wall and reached for his sideboard.

Fiend Hunter exiled the Stormblood Berserker and pumped up the Champion of the Parish, which attacked for two. Stromkirk Noble came through and now it was time for the burn to burning. Arc Trail killed the Champion of the Parish and put a damage on the Fiend Hunter. Galvanic Blast finished the job and the Stormblood Berserker came back to play as a 3/3.
Konan fell way behind as he played his fourth land and passed the turn. Daniel smelled a trap and only sent the Stormblood Berserker into the red zone, making the life totals 17-14 in his favor. He added a Grim Lavamancer to the board and Konan used Moorland Haunt to make a Spirit on end step.
Timely Reinforcements was met by Dismember on the Spirit as Daniel fell to 13. The Spirit died and Konan got three Soldier tokens, but the life gain was negated and it was back to Daniel. Arc Trail was stopped by Mana Leak, but Grim Lavamancer blew a token up and Daniel’s pair of 3/3s attacked. A Soldier token chump blocked one of the attackers, but Konan fell to 11.
A second Fiend Hunter ate the berserker, but Hero of Oxid Ridge slammed into the red zone, rallying Grim Lavamancer and Stromkirk Noble with his battle cry. Konan fell to just 1 life and Grim Lavamancer finished the job the next turn, making Daniel Choi the Standard Open champion!
