Finals: David McDarby vs. David Stroud
Two dueling Davids sat down for this final: David McDarby brought Abzan Maverick to the table, while David Stroud was hoping to earn yet another trophy for the dynamic duo of Monastery Swiftspear and Delver of Secrets.
Deathrite Shaman kicked things off for McDarby, while Stroud fired off a Ponder to set up his draws. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben came next for Mcdarby, and Stroud was forced to spend his second turn casting a Lightning Bolt to get rid of it.McDarby’s follow up, a spooky Sword of Fire and Ice, was met with Force of Will from Stroud, and McDarby used Wasteland to set his opponent back to just a single Volcanic Island before shipping the turn back.
David Stroud went cruising on his next turn, cleaning out his Graveyard for a Treasure Cruise. He found another land, and killed the Deathrite Shaman with a Lightning Bolt, but McDarby simply replaced it with another. It also fell to a burn spell from Stroud, and a Delver of Secrets came out in a bid to begin applying pressure. David McDarby used Swords to Plowshares to get rid of it, then cast a replacement Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
Stroud went digging for more action with a Brainstorm, while McDarby began attacking away with his Thalia. McDarby had been nickle-and-diming with his Deathrite Shamans, and the Stroud had taken several points of damage from his fetchlands, so Stroud sat at only 6 life. He cast a Monastery Swiftspear to hold the fort. McDarby cast a Qasali Pridemage to allow his Thalia to cut Stroud’s life total in half. David Cantripped into a Lightning Bolt to get rid of the Thalia, but McDarby untapped and showed Abrupt Decay to get rid of the Monastery Swiftspear, and the Qasali Pridemage swung in for the win.

David Stroud awaits his fate.
Stroud opened up the action with a Gitaxian Probe to see what he was up again, and saw a juicy hand on McDarby’s side: Burrenton Forge-Tender, Mother of Runes, Gaddock Teeg, Green Sun’s Zenith, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Stoneforge Mystic, Savannah, and Wasteland. He cast a Monastery Swiftspear and got in an attack for 1 before McDarby cast his Burrenton Forge-Tender and shut down the Swiftspear offensive. Stroud fired off some more Gitaxian Probes, then Pondered, and had enough in his graveyard to fuel a turn 2 Treasure Cruise. McDarby cast Spirit of the Labyrinth on his next turn, and Stroud targeted it with a Chain Lightning, which McDarby allowed to resolve rather than cash in his Forge-Tender. A second Monastery Swiftspear joined the first for Stroud, and the were able to attack around the Forge-Tender, dropping McDarby to 15.
McDarby added a pair of Mother of Runes to his board and Wastelanded Stroud back down to a single Volcanic Island before passing the turn. Stroud used a Forked Bolt on both Mothers, and McDarby decided it was worth sacrificing his Burrenton Forge-Tender to keep them both around. McDarby untapped and tried a Green Sun’s Zenith for 2, but Stroud had Force of Will to prevent it. Stroud used another Forked Bolt on both of the Mothers, getting McDarby to tap them both, and cracked in for 6 with his pair of Monastery Swiftspears, dropping McDarby to 5.
McDarby needed to be very careful now, so he thought for a moment before casting Gaddock Teeg. His read was right on, as Stroud had a Treasure Cruise stranded in his hand, and had no more relevant plays. David attacked with his Gaddock Teeg on his next turn, then added a Scavenging Ooze to the board, eating a creature out of his graveyard to back up to 6 life. Stroud drew his card and again had nothing to cast. Seeing that the game would be slipping out of reach once McDarby got to untap with an active Scavenging Ooze, David Stroud extended the hand in defeat.
