Finals: Gerard Fabiano vs. Seth Manfield
It’s no surprise to see U/R Twin in the finals, but Gerard’s Sultai Control deck has been the talk of the tournament. Can Seth, fresh off his Pro Tour Top 8, finally stop Gerard or will the Sultai master win his second Open in five weeks?
Both players opened with a Serum Visions and opted to play land-go for their second and third turn with Seth attempting a Vendilion Clique at the end of Gerard’s fourth turn, but he had the Mana Leak to prevent the 3/1 from hitting the table. Seth resolved a Deceiver Exarch and Gerard killed it with an Abrupt Decay before the ability untapped an Island. Seth played a Scalding Tarn and passed back, leading to Gerard using an Inquisition of Kozilek to take a Remand from Seth’s grip. Gerard played a Snapcaster Mage to reuse the Inquisition but Seth fetched an Island and used his other Remand to prevent the second discard spell.
Seth untapped and used a Pestermite to untap an Island and went to 16 to play a Stomping Ground untapped, allowing him to use an Electrolyze on the Mage and knock Gerard to 15. Gerard delved everything but the Decay to play a one-mana Tasigur and shipped the turn. Seth attacked for two and passed as Gerard activated Tasigur to get a Damnation out of his graveyard. Gerard dropped Seth to 12 with his legend and said go, leading Seth to play Cryptic Command, but Gerard stopped it with a Mana Leak.
Seth brought Gerard to 11 and passed after playing a Steam Vents tapped as Gerard used Tasigur and got Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver back. Gerard hit Seth down to 8 and dropped a Tarmogoyf before passing the turn. Seth went for Splinter Twin on his Pestermite, but Gerard used Cryptic Command to counter it and tap Seth’s team. Gerard untapped and attacked for the win.

Gerard bashed in with the Tarmogoyf to drop Seth to 16 and used a Snapcaster of his own to flashback Inquisition, taking Remand from Seth’s hand. Seth used another Serum Visions and passed after adding a Sulfur Falls to his mana base. Gerard used a Visions of his own and attacked with the team, trading his Mage for Seth’s and knocking Seth to 12 with the 4/5 Tarmogoyf.
Seth simply dropped a Desolate Lighthouse and passed, leading Gerard to knock him to 8 with Tarmogoyf. Gerard passed and Seth flashed in a Deceiver Exarch at the end step, tapping Gerard’s Overgrown Tomb, untapped and played Splinter Twin on his Exarch. Gerard pondered before using a Mana Leak, but Seth had the Dispel and evened the match.

Gerard opened the final game at 17 after fetching a Breeding Pool and playing a Serum Visions, bottoming both cards. Gerard used another Visions after Seth played a tapped Steam Vents and passed after playing a Creeping Tar Pit. Gerard added a Mistry Rainforest to his board and passed as Seth searched up an Island at the end step. Seth then played a Mountain and it was Gerard who fetched an Island at the end step this time, but he also went for a Vendilion Clique that resolved, but died to an Electrolyze from Seth before its ability did. Gerard opted to take Seth’s own Clique, untapped, played a Swamp and a Tasigur, leaving just the Clique in his yard.
Seth played a Scalding Tarn and shipped the turn, leading Gerard to attack with Tasigur after playing a tapped Overgrown Tomb. Seth fetched an Island and took the hit, falling to 14, and attempted to bounce it with Cryptic Command, but Gerard had a Mana Leak to keep his threat on the board. Seth passed after dropping a Desolate Lighthouse and attempted to tap down the Tasigur with a Deceiver Exarch before Gerard’s attack step, but Gerard used a Mana Leak, which drew out a Negate from Seth. Gerard used a Snapcaster to reuse the Leak and kept the Exarch off the table and allowed him to knock Seth down to 10.
Seth passed his next turn with no play, leading Gerard to attack with his team and Seth used a Snapcaster Mage to reuse his Electrolyze, killing the opposing Mage, then chumped Tasigur with the 2/1. Gerard played a Forest and emptied his hand by deploying a Tarmogoyf. When Seth passed, Gerard used Tasigur’s ability and got a Tarmogoyf from the graveyard. Gerard activated his Tar Pit and Seth flashed in Snapcaster Mage to use Cryptic Command, opting to tap Gerard’ team and draw a card. Gerard played the second Tarmogoyf and shipped the turn.
Seth looked for answers by activating his Lighthouse, pitching a land, and passed after playing Tectonic Edge. Gerard attacked with his team and Seth chumped Tasigur with his Mage, falling to 3. Gerard passed and Seth used the Edge to destroy the Tar Pit. Gerard tapped it for mana as well as three other lands to activate Tasigur and got an Inquisition of Kozilek.
