Finals: Grant Wilkinson vs. Nick Carlson
“This is dumb,” Nick said with a smile. While they were playing for ultimate victory, these two friends had come to the site together and outperformed the entire event as a duo, entering the Top 8 as the bottom seeds but rising to the finals!
Nick's got a dismal matchup in the finals, but it stings much less to see a friend on the other side.
Grant had clinched the seventh seed in the Top 8... which meant he got the play over Nick, amusingly enough. “I’d have beaten you on the die roll,” Nick declared. Grant’s seven were fine, but Nick went to six cards and kept Polluted Delta, Force of Will, Umezawa’s Jitte, Inquisition of Kozilek, Stoneforge Mystic, and Brainstorm—which Grant spotted with a turn 1 Gitaxian Probe, followed by Scalding Tarn.
Nick fetched Underground Sea to cast Inquisition of Kozilek, revealing Infernal Tutor, Ad Nauseam, Brainstorm, Cabal Ritual, and Lotus Petal alongside a Swamp. Grant lost his Brainstorm, and peeled Cabal Therapy off the top to take Force of Will out of the equation. Grant decided to go ahead and Infernal up a second Cabal Ritual and try to Ad Nauseam on the following turn, leaving himself vulnerable to another Force or a topdecked Thoughtseize.
Brainstorming, Nick played Karakas and ended the turn. Grant bit the bullet for both Cabal Rituals with three mana floating as he resolved Ad Nauseam. He only had to go to 9 life before Nick picked up his cards in concession.
Grant's Storm build has worked out well today.

Nick’s first seven met a snap keep before Undeground Sea and Inquisition of Kozilek hit the board. That pitched Preordain, leaving Grant with Carpet of Flowers, Dark Ritual, two Duress, and Gemstone Mine. Stoneforge Mystic for Batterskull gave Nick a clock, while Grant played two Duresses to pitch all of Nick’s spells—Force of Will and Batterskull.
Now Grant was cantriping, beginning with Ponder. He shuffled those three cards away, then drew and passed. Nick sent for a point of damage before casting a second Stoneforge Mystic and failing to find, his remaining equipment tucked into the sideboard. “Messed up,” he admitted. Grant kept up with the Ponders, keeping this one after it found Brainstorm. Another Duress took away Nick’s Spell Pierce, and he passed.
Carpet gave Grant the mana to Brainstorm this turn, and he threw back a Tendrils before debating the next card to go. Doing some quick math, he decided to cast Infernal Tutor revealing Dark Ritual and then play Lotus Petal before dropping those Rituals to go to six storm and cast Past in Flames with two black mana floating.
