Finals: Ivan Jen vs. Justin Porchas
Ivan’s Jeskai Heroic Combo deck has taken the tournament by storm. Will he go on to win the whole thing or will Justin and Abzan Midrange put an end to his Jeskai Ascendancy combo shenanigans?
Ivan smiles after taking Game 1.
Both players led with tapped lands and Ivan got into the red zone with a Monastery Swiftspear before playing a Mystic Monastery. Justin made his first play a Thoughtseize, taking a Seeker of the Way from Ivan. Ivan played a Springleaf Drum and a Dragon Mantle on his Swiftspear and attacked Justin to 13 after one firebreathing pump. Justin used another Thoughtseize to get the Jeskai Charm from Ivan and passed, stuck on two lands.
Ivan played a Favored Hoplite and attacked Justin to 7 with some pumps from the Mantle on his Swiftspear. Justin untapped, studied the board and decided it was time to go to Game 2.

Justin looks to his sideboard for help.
After two temples, Justin made it to the board first with a Sylvan Caryatid. Ivan played a Favored Hoplite and took a damage from a Mana Confluence to play a Springleaf Drum. Justin played Courser of Kruphix and added a Temple of Silence to his board. Ivan went to 18 to play a Chasm Skulker and played a Mystic Monastery.
Justin knocked Ivan to 16 with his Courser and fired off a Thoughtseize, taking a Retraction Helix from Ivan. Ivan drew a card and grew his Skulker and played a Dragon Mantle on the Hoplite, but Justin used a Hero’s Downfall on it in response. Ivan attacked with his Skulker and used a Defiant Strike on it to draw a card and grow it again, knocking Justin to 16. Justin hit Ivan to 14 with the Courser and deployed Siege Rhino, bringing him back to 20.
Ivan’s Skulker grew again from his draw step and sent it into the red zone. Justin dropped back to 16 and Ivan passed the turn after playing a land. Justin attacked with his Courser and Rhino to knock Ivan to 5. Ivan’s Skulker got bigger after untapping and shipped the turn with no play. Justin tried to use an Abzan Charm on the Skulker at the end step, but Ivan had a Gods Willing to protect it. Justin bashed again and Ivan threw the Skulker in front of the Rhino and used a Jeskai Charm on the Courser, but Justin responded with a Murderous Cut on the Skulker, leaving Ivan dead to the trample.

Ivan kicked off the final game with an Akroan Crusader off a Battlefield Forge while Justin played a Sandsteppe Citadel. Ivan added a Temple of Triumph and a Favored Hoplite and Justin matched with a Sylvan Caryatid. Ivan attacked and knocked Justin to 17 so Ivan took two to play Jeskai Ascendancy.
Justin had another Caryatid and a land before passing. Ivan pondered his play before playing Ajani’s Presence on the Crusader, making a token and triggering Ascendancy. Ivan moved to combat, sending in the team, Justin put a Caryatid in front of the Crusader knocking Justin to 13. Justin went for an End Hostilities and Ivan had the Negate.
Ivan untapped, “I think I got this.”
He started with Dragon Mantle on the Crusader, then used Ajani’s Presence on the Crusader, used Retraction Helix, all the while doing the math, making tokens, and upping his creature’s power. When the dust settled, he attacked for the win.
