Finals: Jacob Tobey vs. Ruger Hebert
“Ready to flip some coins?”
Tobey and Ruger are in this finals with near identical R/G Kibler-esque Aggro decks. Which one of these players will be lucky enough to ‘flip’ heads up?
As the seven seed (with Tobey as the 8) Ruger had the play and began by going to 18 off of Stomping Ground to cast Elvish Mystic. Tobey had something similar, casting Arbor Elf with his dual land after taking two damage. Ruger attacked with his Elvish Mystic and cast another Elf after combat and dropped a tapped Stomping Ground number two.
“Turn three Dragon?!”
Ruger's hoping his beats are more beastly!
Tobey pondered how to proceed if that indeed were the case, deciding upon using Flinthoof Boar as Boggart Ram-Gang to drop Ruger down some life points. Instead of Thundermaw Hellkite however, Ruger had Hellrider and attacks with both the Devil and one Elf dropped Tobey to 9. Tobey cast Domri Rade then used the -2 to fight off the Hellrider with his Boar. But Ruger had the follow-up he needed: Strangleroot Geist and Volcanic Strength (maindeck!) on an Elf. Tobey fell to 4, and used Domri’s +1 before casting Scavenging Ooze (with two green mana available…
Ruger 1, Tobey 0.
Tobey led with a snap keep while Ruger took slightly longer to keep his seven. Tobey led with Arbor Elf turn one and +1 Domri turn two. Ruger had a much slower draw, with two Rottbound Crag for his lands and Pillar of Flame on the Elf on turn two. Tobey once more whiffed with his Domri Rade but added another copy of Arbor Elf nonetheless. Ruger cast Scavenging Ooze with his third turn. Tobey cast Ghor-Clan Rampager and used Domri Rade’s -2 to throw the 4/4 and Ruger’s 2/2 into the Arena. The Ooze ate the Elf body in Tobey’s graveyard before binning the Ooze, and Tobey even got in one damage with his extraneous mana animal.
Ruger played his fourth land and thought long and hard before electing to simply pass with four mana up. Domri once more missed, but with the board advantage and the run of play Tobey attacked for five to drop Ruger to 14, then added a second copy of the 4/4 trampler to his board. Ruger played his fifth land and dropped Thundermaw Hellkite for some defense, but Tobey had Volcanic Strength to make a Rampager a 6/6, then used Domri’s fight to fight the Dragon and attacked for eleven damage to drop Ruger to 3. Ruger chuckled as he drew for the turn, but scooped facing down the massive army.
Ruger 1, Tobey 1.
“If you didn’t have the Strength I’d be in good shape,” maligned Ruger, referring to the Mizzium Mortars Overload he could have cast had his Dragon survived the turn.
Tobey's hoping his sideboard plan pans out!
Tobey had to mulligan for the last and deciding game of the match, and when he kept Ruger led things off with Stomping Ground. Tobey had the Elf draw to get ahead on mana, but Ruger had the first shot to drop Strangleroot Geist so he dealt the first damage of the final game. Tobey dealt himself even more damage, falling to 16 to cast Flinthoof Boar and Arbor Elf on his second turn, setting up the ‘break serve’ draw of a turn three Hellkite (if he had it!). Ruger, who had to be content on just lands for his mana, attacked with Strangleroot Geist, and Ghor-Clan Rampager meant that Tobey took three and the Geist survived.
“Gotta hope you don’t have the Dragon.”
Scavenging Ooze was the play from Tobey.
“At least we get to play Magic without the Tundermaws.”
Tobey had three green mana available for the Ooze though, so he was able to gain some life before Mizzium Mortars took down the Ooze. Flinthoof Boar was Ruger’s follow-up post combat. Ghor-Clan Rampager hardcast was Tobey’s line, attempting to stabilize the board on 13 life and facing down the pair of green aggressive attackers. Ruger dropped Hellrider… and passed! So the ploy worked. Volcanic Strength on Ghor-Clan Rampager made the Beast a 6/6 unblockable monster, and Domri Rade from Tobey fought the Hellrider as soon as it hit the board. The 6/6 stayed back on defense for the time being though, hoping to keep the board from developing any more aggression before commiting to any attacks.
Ruger dropped Flinthoof Boar and gave it haste, then he attacked Domri. A Boar got skewered in the suicide attack, but the powerful planeswalker died in the onslaught and prevented Tobey from gaining any further advantage from the permanent. A second Volcanic Strength on the Ghor-Clan Rampager signaled it was finally time to get attacks in, and the 8/8 dropped Ruger to 12. Ruger, now behind the eightball himself, found big papa Thundermaw Hellkite on top of his library to be able to drop Tobey to 8… but that wouldn’t be enough to win this race without a little help.
Tobey found Hellrider on top of his deck though, and got the four triggers from the Devil plus the eight from the Rampager to deal the exact amount of damage Tobey needed for the win!
Tobey 2, Ruger 1.
