Finals: James Black vs. Beaux Bruggman
Former Sacramento native Beaux Bruggman masterfully piloted his Esper Control deck all the way to the finals of the Standard Open, and the trophy was in sight. His opponent, Arizona’s James Black was looking to steal the trophy from the locals, and his Wolf Run Ramp deck had the power to get it done.
Jason Black looks to take the trophy back to Tucson.
A Rampant Growth was met by Mana Leak to start the game, but a second Rampant Growth was free to dig up a land. James played his fourth land and passed the turn, allowing Beaux to cycle Think Twice on end step.
Gideon Jura arrived and the Primeval Titan that looked to trump him was met with Go for the Throat, leaving James with a mass of lands including two Inkmoth Nexus and Kessig Wolf Run. Gideon Jura went to battle, knocking James to 14 and forcing a Time Walk as Inkmoth Nexus assaulted the planeswalker for four with the help of Kessig Wolf Run.
The cycle repeated itself on the next turn and James fell to 8, but Beaux declined to play the Lingering Souls in his hand to protect his planeswalker, opting to leave five mana open and pass the turn. He tried to dig for an answer when the manland attacked again, but Forbidden Alchemy found him nothing of note and Gideon fell.
He was quickly replaced by a second, but the second one fell just as quickly to the Inkmoth Nexus plus two Galvanic Blasts. That forced Beaux to play the Lingering Souls for defense as James switched to the poison plan.

Slagstorm wiped out the spirits and let the Inkmoth Nexus tag-team for two poison. The second half of the spirits blocked and Beaux collected his fifth poison counter, but then it was Sorin’s turn to take over. He combined with another Lingering Souls to make short work of the rest of James’ life total and we moved to game two.
Bruggman 1, Black 0
It was an ugly start for James as he quickly sent his first two hands back to the well. He managed to get one Rampant Growth through, but a second was Mana Leaked and he was stuck without another land. That opened the door for Liliana of the Veil to get to work on James’ neutered hand. Thrun, the Last Troll was eaten by the sadistic planeswalker, and Sorin, Lord of Innistrad took over again as James struggled to get any action going.
Beaux Bruggman wins 2-0 and is your Standard Open champion!
