Finals: James Hames vs. John Farrow
James is on the play with Abzan Midrange, but would that be enough facing down John and his Sidisi Whip deck?
John’s army of insects grows.
John got the finals started with a Satyr Wayfinder, finding a Polluted Delta while James had a Courser of Kruphix on Turn 3. John matched with a Courser of his own and passed. James attacked with his Courser and John chumped with his Wayfinder and James had his fourth land and slammed Siege Rhino. John had Sidisi, Brood Tyrant on his fourth turn, but whiffed on the mill for a creature.
James attacked with his team and John put his Courser in front of James’. James killed Sidisi with Hero’s Downfall and fired off a Thoughtseize, taking Whip of Erebos. John played Commune with the Gods twice, getting Hornet Queen and Doomwake Giant. James knocked John to 9 with his same attack as the turn before and followed it up with a Sorin, Solemn Visitor that ticked up. John went to 10 by playing a land, attacked Sorin down to 3 loyalty with his Courser and dropped Doomwake Giant.
John killed off James’ Courser with a Murderous Cut in his draw step, but James used Banishing Light on the opposing Giant and attacked with the Rhino, dropping John to 5. John went back to 6 from a land, hit Sorin for 2 and deployed Hornet Queen before passing. James cashed in his Sorin for a Vampire and played Soul of Theros before choosing not to attack into the deathtouch insects.
John played Pharika, God of Affliction and shipped the turn. James pumped his team with Soul of Theros and sent in everything. John made some snakes with Pharika and put one creature in front of each threat as James went up to 42. John found a source of lifelink of his own in Whip of Erebos then played a Courser before passing. James considered his options before playing an Elspeth, Sun’s Champion and making three tokens.
John whipped back a Hornet Queen and killed Elspeth with a bunch of flyers and going back up to 9. James had another Planeswalker, though, this time a Liliana Vess that tutored up a card. John attacked with his flyers and killed off Liliana and knocked James to 40 before playing a Hornet Queen. James untapped and slammed his own Hornet Queen he tutored up with Liliana. John attacked with a swarm of Insects and James declined to block and fell to 32.
James decided to send in his team and use the Soul of Theros to pump his team. After some complicated blocks, John fell to 9 while James gained 43 life going to 75. Then John went up to 20 and lost a handful of creatures. At the end step, John brought back some Hornet Queens and an Elvish Mystic by exiling his Soul of Innistrad. John got another bunch of insects from a returned Hornet Queen and attacked James down to 67 while going up to 30. James repeated his previous turn and let John figure out blocks. After blocks and much carnage, James wound up at 99 and John fell to 17.
John played another Courser and yet another Hornet Queen after clearing the top card with a fetch land that failed to find a basic, dropping him to 16. James continued to bash in with a boost from the Soul. This time James wound up 115 and John dipped to 14. John whipped back a Hornet Queen and sent in 15 insects, bringing him to 29. James had no reason to change his plans and sent in the team once again. John made some more snakes with Pharika and laid out his blocks. John put seven creatures in front of the Soul along with Insects on a smattering of James’ attackers. When the dust settled John fell to 27 and James went up to 150 and James lost his Soul.
John went to 29 with a land and whipped back a Hornet Queen and exiled James’ Soul of Theros, giving him a snake in the process. John sent in 15 flyers to knock James to 135 as John went to 44.James chose not to attack and played an Elspeth, making three soldiers. John sent 11 flyers at Elspeth six at James. John went to 63 and James fell to 132 while losing his Elspeth. John kept the fun going with another Hornet Queen and passed with 10 cards left in his library. James threw away a token to reach raid for his Wingmate Roc then passed as John made two snakes, but James exiled the God with Abzan Charm in response.
John attacked for 19 in the air, bringing him to 86 while James fell to 112. Both players kept attacking, but James eventually lost his board to John’s endless chain of insects. James fell to 74 when he ran out of creatures as John was trying to win a race with his library. John tried to stay afloat with a Siege Rhino, but John continue attacking in for chunks of 21, dropping James to 35. John eventually took Game 1 with two more attacks as James drew two lands, leaving John at more than 200 life when all was done.

James, on a mulligan to five, led with an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth into Plains as John used a Thoughtseize on Turn 2 to take an Abzan Charm before playing a second Opulent Palace. James had a Thoughtseize to take a Thoughtseize from John, but missed on land. John played two Satyr Wayfinders as James eventually found his lands and kept up the 1/1 beats, dropping James 13. James fell to 11 to draw two cards with a Charm, then played a Courser of Kruphix.
John killed the Courser with a Murderous Cut and knocked him to 10 with his Wayfinders. John found a Whip of Erebos, brought it back, and attacked James to 6, bringing him up to 22. James found a Banishing light for the Whip and added a Temple of Silence to his board. James had to kill a 1/1 with a Hero’s Downfall to only fall to 5, but did find an Elspeth on his next turn to make three soldiers.
James started sending in the soldiers and added a Wingmate Roc and its friend before getting more soldiers with Elspeth. John found a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant that generated a zombie before passing. James attacked with his flyers, but John had the Murderous Cut to kill the original Roc. James made more tokens, but didn’t get to ultimate the Planeswalker as Jong conceded on his next draw step.

James feels the sting of combat.
John hit the board first with a Satyr Wayfinder, netting him a Temple of Malady as James played a second Temple of Malady for himself. John used a Thoughtseize to take a Courser of Kruphix and played his Temple. After James played a Temple of Silence, John got in for 1 and played Sidisi, Brood Tyrant that made a zombie. James used a Thoughtseize of his own to take a Whip of Erebos from John and then used a Drown in Sorrow, leaving John with just a Sidisi.
John played a Courser of Kruphix and attacked, getting a zombie, but losing two more Whips in the mill. James played a bare Wingmate Roc and passed back. John simply played a Temple of Malady and passed back after gaining a life. James continued tapping out, this time for an Elspeth, making three soldiers. At the end step, John exiled his Soul of Innistrad to get back a Hornet Queen, Doomwake Giant, and a Courser of Kruphix.
John played the Giant to clear James’ 1/1s then used a Murderous Cut on the Roc, and killed Elspeth with his attack that got him another zombie. James took a Hornet Queen with a Thoughtseize and passed the turn. John attacked with his team and James extended the hand.
