Finals: Jared Boettcher vs. Eric English
Freshly-minted Rookie of the Year Jared Boettcher had made it to the finals with a variant on Black Devotion geared to beat control. Those tweaks wouldn’t help him here, however, as Eric English was on Rabble Red and was looking to earn a trophy for the goblin hordes.
Eric has his Thoughts Seized.
Jared kicked things off with a Thoughtseize, seeing Firefist Striker, Firedrinker Satyr, Burning-Tree Emissary, Mutavault , and three Mountains. He cleared away the Emissary, then had Devour Flesh on his next turn to kill off the Firedrinker Satyr. Eric had Firefirst Striker next, and Jared’s response was Pack Rat. Eric cast Foundry-Street Denizen, then tapped two lands and his two creatures to kill off the Rat with a Stoke the Flames before it could replicate out of control.
Jared played his lands and passed, but had Bile Blight on Firefist Striker when Eric animated his Mutavault and attempted to attack with three creatures. He untapped and cast Desecration Demon, but Eric had a big draw in the form of Goblin Rabblemaster. He sacrificed a Denizen to feed the Demon and crashed in with his team, dropping Jared to 12. Jared had Hero’s Downfall to keep the Rabblemaster from causing any more trouble, then had Gray Merchant of Asphodel to gain some much needed life.
Eric had Stoke the Flames to clear the 2/4 out of the way for his Mutavault to attack, but the Desecration demon was making swift work of his life total. The Demon attacked Eric down to 8, and Eric drew and cast a Rubblebelt Maaka. The next swing dropped Eric to 1, and a second Demon post-combat sealed the deal for Jared.

Jared rolls with Demons.
Eric had a turn 1 Firedrinker Satyr, and with no follow-up, he simply pumped it once and attacked for three on turn 2. Jared used Devour Flesh to keep the board clear, and Eric activated Mutavault and dropped Jared to 15, still without casting another spell. Jared had Nightveil Specter on turn 3, sending Eric into the tank. He eventually decided that Hall of Triumph was the plan, naming red and passing.
Jared attacked with his Specter, pilfering another copy of Hall of Triumph from Eric’s deck. Eric untapped and cast Eidolon of the Great Revel, but Jared had end-step Bile Blight to kill it off. He untapped and cast Gray Merchant of Asphodel, dropping Eric to 11 and jumping back up to 18. Eric used Lightning Strike to kill off Nightveil Specter before it could cause further trouble, then added Firefist Striker to the board.
Jared drew and cast a Pack Rat, and Eric had no way to kill it, only adding Firedrinker Satyr to the board and passing. Jared made a second Rat at end step, then untapped and attacked with everything. A Stoke the Flames from Eric killed off one Rat, but it was replaced with another, and Eric fell to 5. He untapped and attacked with his creatures, drawing Hero’s Downfall on the Firefist Striker.
Jared untapped and shoved his Pack Rats into the red zone. Eric extended the hand in defeat.
