Finals: Jeff Hoogland vs. Adam Jansen
Jeff left the Standard Open Top 4 in defeat this morning, but he ended Sunday playing the final match of the Legacy Open. Would he be able to close out with a win after starting on a loss?
Jeff's working to improve on a string of near-misses in recent months.
Forgotten Cave for Jeff began the match, while Adam Pondered off an Island. Chalice of the Void earns Force of Will from Adam, who needed to protect his cantrips while he sought the combo. Brainstorm successfully dug up what Adam needed, stashing Sneak Attack on top of the deck with City of Traitors and Simian Spirit Guide already in his hand.
Jeff played Maze of Ith to deter potential Griselbrand attacks, but that wouldn’t save him from Emrakul’s trigger. Adam fetched Mountain on his own turn before playing City of Traitors and Sneak Attack. Simian Spirit Guide gave Adam the mana he needed, and Emrakul knocked on Jeff’s door, wiping away his permanents but getting lost in the Maze. “I’ll take Violent Ultimatum,” Adam said.
Adam's Sneak and Show list incorporates Spirit Guides for speed.

Starting with Tranquil Thicket, Jeff passed while Adam Pondered for some setup. Leaving those three on top, he drew and ended the turn after playing Lotus Petal. Jeff fetched with Wooded Foothills on his turn for Thalia, which Adam allowed.
He got paid for playing that Lotus Petal early here, as he could now cast Show and Tell to put in Griselbrand, if he so desired. City of Traitors gave him two mana in conjunction with the two he already had, and the 7/7 entered play on Adam’s side of the board. Jeff has a nice monster himself, in Knight of the Reliquary.
Wasteland took out Adam’s Volcanic Island, and Knight grabbed Karakas to bounce the Griselbrand—Adam drew seven in response. Finding those unimpressive, he went for another seven, falling to six. Thalia took Adam to 4, and he was very vulnerable. With a hand full of cards, Adam drew, checked them all, and conceded.

Adam began the game on the play for the first time with Misty Rainforest, while Jeff had only Wooded Foothills. Volcanic Island for Adam off the fetch, while Jeff fetched Bayou up. Adam dropped Ancient Tomb and Lotus Petal for Sneak Attack, forcing Jeff to have Burning Wish for Reverent Silence... or bust.
He cycled Tranquil Thicket then untapped, playing Plateau and Burning Wish to destroy the Sneak Attack. “That’s the first time I’ve ever gotten to do that,” Jeff admitted. Adam had no other form of “cheating” available for his big monsters, so he went into the tank with Brainstorm only to come up empty.
Jeff added Karakas to the board and played Gaddock Teeg. “You’re really not making this easy for me,” Adam admitted. Fetching another Volcanic Island, Adam shuffled away his clunkier cards to look for a Show and Tell. He already had his own Karakas at the ready to take away Jeff’s, but drew an uncastable Sneak Attack.
Gaddock Teeg knocked Adam to 20, and Jeff cast Sylvan Library and Dark Confidant. Adam’s next draw step was the Intuition he needed—that would do the trick. He took 4 damage from Jeff’s little squad, Knight of the Reliquary joining them, then cast the Intuition in the end step for three Show and Tells.
Untapping, he played Karakas to nuke Jeff’s and then cast the Show and Tell, putting Sneak Attack into play. He dropped in Emrakul, and Jeff frowned as Simian Spirit Guide hit exile before Griselbrand joined he table shortly after.
