Finals: Kurt Spiess vs. Daryl Ayers
Kurt and Daryl have made it here with some unconventional choices. RUG Delver used to be the top deck of the format, but has since fallen out of favor. Lands has always been on the fringe of the format, and occasionally will spike an Open. Now that they meet in the finals, which of these gentlemen will win the cup?
Daryl had the play and led things off with Misty Rainforest, while Kurt led with Tranquil Thicket. Tarmogoyf came out on turn two, and Kurt responded on his turn with Wasteland on Daryl’s non-Wasteland land and Exploration. Daryl did not find another land on top though, so Kurt’s Life from the Loam brought back Wasteland and defeated Daryl’s land. Kurt also dropped Maze of Ith to cancel out Tarmogoyf.
Unable to cast spells, and only with a 2/3, Kurt was able to freely assemble Dark Depths and Thespian’s Stage over the next few turns.
Kurt 1, Daryl 0.
Daryl led off with a fetchland and no further plays, while Kurt pretty much went off: Grove of the Burnwillows, Mox Diamond, Exploration, fetchland. Stifle took down the fetch before anything too crazy could get going, and on turn two Daryl added Tarmogoyf to the fray. But Kurt’s snap-keep wasn’t done: Life from the Loam was a pretty good play. Though Daze countered it, Kurt still had both Bojuka Bog and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. Daryl did not find a land on top, and after seeing two more nonlands on top Daryl conceded the finals.
