Finals: Peter Nguyen vs. Oliver Tomajko
The finals of #SCGPROV is ready! It is Oliver Tomajko’s innovative Abzan Reanimator vs. Peter Nguyen’s Mono-Red Aggro. Read on to see who wins and takes home the trophy!
Peter, as second seed, chooses to play first and keeps his opening seven. Oliver, who snuck in as the eighth seed, will be on the draw and has to mulligan to all the way down to four. The finals are underway!
Peter leads with a turn one Mountain into Monastery Swiftspear, just as his Mono-Red Aggro deck wants to do. Oliver plays a Temple of Malady, scrys the card to the top, and passes back. Peter keeps up the aggression with a Foundry Street Denizen and dashed Lightning Berserker, putting Oliver on the back foot, especially after mulliganing to four cards.
Oliver plays a Forest and Sylvan Caryatid for his turn, hoping to get some blocks and save some life. Peter will have none of it though, as he casts a Hordeling Outburst to trigger his Monastery Swiftspear and his Foundry Street Denizen, swinging in for massive amounts of damage! Oliver plays a Thoughtseize and Peter reveals his hand full of Lightning: Lightning Berserker, Lightning Strike, and Lightning Strike! Oliver takes Peter’s Lightning Berserker, and then casts another Sylvan Caryatid, followed by passing the turn back.
Peter draws for his turn, gives a wry smile, and dashes in the freshly drawn Lightning Berserker into play. He swings with his entire team, and after pumping the Berserker, Oliver is at two life while his opponent has two Lightning Strikes in hand.
Oliver draws a third Sylvan Caryatid for his turn, casts it, and immediately scoops his cards up.
Peter wins Game 1, and is up in the finals 1-0!
Oliver hopes to have better luck, both with his opening hand and the game, in Game 2. Being on the play should help, and he keeps his opening seven. Peter also keeps his opening seven.
Both players trade land drops on their first turns without playing anything, but Oliver has a second turn Sylvan Caryatid. Not to be outdone, Peter calls forth a couple of Goblins with a Dragon Fodder. Oliver plays a third turn Courser of Kruphix and plays a land, gaining a life, and pass back to his opponent. Peter wastes no time in killing the new Courser by casting both a Wild Slash and a Searing Blood on the Centaur. He then attacks with his Goblins and passes the turn.
Oliver plays the Fleecemane Lion off the top of his deck, followed by scrying the next card to the bottom with a Temple of Malady. For his turn, Peter strikes down the Lion with his Lightning Strike and continues to beatdown. However, Oliver still has more plays, this time with a Morph creature. But, at the end of Oliver’s turn, Peter casts Wild Slash on the Morph, forcing Oliver to Megamorph it into a Den Protector. The Den Protector gets back the Fleecemane Lion from Oliver’s graveyard, and then takes its place.
Peter dashes in a Goblin Heelcutter on his turn, trying to do as much damage as possible before Oliver can gain life and deploy bigger threats. But Oliver does just that, casting both a Siege Rhino and the newly resurrected Fleecemane Lion on his turn. Peter continues to try to put on the pressure with his tokens, but they are blocked and killed by Oliver’s Lion and Rhino. After Ultimate Pricing a Goblin Heelcutter, Oliver casts a Courser of Kruphix and plays a land, gaining more life. All Peter can do is play a land for the turn, followed by a quick concession.
Oliver wins Game 2, and has tied the finals 1-1!
Peter gets to be on the play for Game 3, which is right where he and his deck wants to be. He keeps his opening seven and leads with Mountain and Foundry Street Denizen. Oliver, also keeping his opening seven, plays a Sandsteppe Citadel, and passes the turn. Peter, keeping a one lander, plays a Monastery Swiftspear, and attacks with both of his creatures, trying to make this a quick one. Oliver fetches for a Forest and plays a blocker in the form of Satyr Wayfinder, getting a Temple of Malady for his troubles.
Peter peels the Mountain off the top of his deck, plays it, and then casts another Foundry Street Denizen and dashes in a Lightning Berserker. After attacks, he passes back to Oliver, who plays a Fleecemane Lion and passes back.
Peter keeps the aggression going, casting a second Monastery Swiftspear and dashing in the Lightning Berserker. However, this time, Oliver blocks a Swiftspear with a Fleecemane Lion and Murderous Cuts the Lightning Berserker. All Peter can do is pass back to Oliver.
Oliver Morphs a creature on his side and passes back to Peter. Peter finally hits his third land drop and plays a Hordeling Outburst, summoning forth three 1/1 Goblin tokens. Oliver has the answer for these Goblins in the form of Doomwake Giant, clearing away this horde of Goblins and making Peter give a shake of his head. All Peter can do for his turn is cast a Searing Blood on the Morph to do some damage to Oliver in hopes to finish him off with burn.
But Oliver plays a Whip of Erebos, and attacks his opponent, gaining a massive amount of life. Seeing the writing on the wall, Peter smiles and tells Oliver he has it, conceding to the Whip of Erebos!
Oliver Tomajko wins Game 3 and the match! He is your #SCGPROV Standard Open Champion!
