Finals: Rich Shay vs. Jason Smith
We’ve got Vintage master Rich Shay in the finals after going 8-0 in the Legacy portion of the Invitational this weekend with BUG Delver. Rich took one loss in the Swiss today but is one win from a trophy. Standing before him is Jason Smith and Death and Taxes. Would one of the six Delver decks from the Top 8 prevail or would Death and Taxes repeat on the Open Series?
Rich abruptly decays an Aether Vial.
Both players kept seven and Rich started the finals off with a Ponder. Jason had no turn-1 play, just a Plains. Rich fetched up a Tropical Island to go with his Underground Sea and dropped Tarmogoyf. Jason had another Plains and used a Swords to Plowshares on the Tarmogoyf before passing the turn. Rich played a replacement Tarmogoyf and another Underground Sea and passed back.
Jason played a Rishadan Port and used another Swords on the Tarmogoyf to put Rich up to 24, then played an Aether Vial. Rich started his fourth turn with a Brainstorm then played a Verdant Catacombs and a Sylvan Library. Jason found another Port and passed so he could Port during Rich’s upkeep, so Rich floated enough to use an Abrupt Decay on the Vial. Rich drew three cards and paid the life off his Library to play his third Tarmogoyf of the game.
Jason found his first creature of the game in Phyrexian Revoker and named Liliana of the Veil with it. He followed it up with a Spirit of the Labyrinth, but Rich had two Dazes to keep the 3/1 off the table. Rich bashed for 6 then used a Hymn to Tourach to rip Jason’s hand from him, and ended his turn with a Deathrite Shaman.
Jason sent his Revoker into the red zone and Rich fell to 13 and Jason dropped a Mother of Runes before passing and porting Rich’s Bayou during his upkeep. Rich used his floated mana to help cast a Dimir Charm to kill the Mother and attacked with his Tarmogoyf, dropping Jason to 7 and ended his turn with another Shaman. Jason drew a card for his turn and had seen enough.

Jason focuses on a play.
Jason kept his seven and Rich went to Paris. Jason led things off with a Mother of Runes off the rip while Rich Pondered. Jason opted to slam a Stoneforge Mystic on turn 2, fetching up a Batterskull. Rich played his second Underground Sea and played a Pithing Needle naming Stoneforge Mystic. Jason attacked with his glorified Squire and followed it up with a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben then used a Wasteland on an Underground Sea. Rich simply had a Wasteland and passed back.
Jason attacked Rich down to 15 then fired off another Wasteland on Rich’s dual land. Rich bricked on land and passed with nothing but a Wasteland of his own. Jason attacked for 3 more and passed after playing a Karakas. Rich found a land, but it was another Wasteland and shipped the turn with no color of mana available. Jason attacked Rich down to 9 and passed after adding a Horizon Canopy to his board.
Rich drew and passed and Jason sent him down to 6 and deployed an Aether Vial. Rich couldn’t find a source of colored mana and had to discard down to seven cards. Jason attacked Rich down to 3 and Rich used a Wasteland on the Karakas. Rich drew a card, it was a Bayou, but it was too late.

Rich shipped his opener back again while Jason kept his seven. Rich opened up on a Misty Rainforest and Jason had Mother of Runes off the start. Rich fetched up a Bayou then played Tarmogoyf after adding an Underground Sea to his mana base. Jason played his second Plains and resolved a Stoneforge Mystic that fetched up Umezawa’s Jitte.
Rich didn’t hit his third land and played Liliana of the Veil and forced Jason to sacrifice a creature. Jason chose Mom and Rich passed the turn after Jason used Mom to give SFG protection from green. Jason resolved a Rest in Peace to exile the graveyards and sent SFM at Liliana. Rich didn’t throw Tarmogoyf in the way and let the Planeswalker go away and Jason ended his turn by using a Wasteland on the Underground Sea.
Rich drew a card and considered his options before passing without another land. Jason played a Rishadan Port and an Aether Vial and Rich used a Golgari Charm to blow up the Rest in Peace in response, then returned his Tropical Island to Daze the Vial, which Jason didn’t pay. Jason passed and Rich replayed his Tropical Island and landed another Tarmogoyf. Rich attacked with his Tarmogoyf but Jason used SFM to put the Batterskull from his hand into play to block and kill the Tarmogoyf.
Jason suited up his germ with the Jitte and knocked Rich down to 15 and passed with two counters on the legendary equipment. Rich thought about his plays and decided to pass with his lands up. Jason played a Thalia and Rich responded by using an Abrupt Decay on the Jitte and Jason responded by pumping his germ and knocked Rich down to 7. Jason ported Rich’s Bayou in his upkeep and all Rich could do was play a Delver of Secrets.
Jason attacked with his BBD germ token and Rich fell to 3 while Jason went up to 40. Jason ended his turn by playing a Serra Avenger and made sure to Port the Bayou. Rich’s Delver didn’t flip and he extended the hand after the draw.
