Finals: Ryan Overturf vs. Joshua Snider
Ryan tanks on the perfect configuration against this brand of Maverick.
RUG came into this Top 8 with five slots, but Ryan had slain most of his brothers en route to the finals. Josh, representing Maverick in yet another finals, was looking to keep Mother of Runes on top!
Rewarded with the play thanks to his seed, Ryan fetched on turn 1 for Volcanic Island and cast Ponder. Shuffling back those three cards, he sent the turn to Josh. A fetch for Josh on the first turn evened the score, Josh leading Forest and Noble Hierarch. Ryan had Tropical Island and another Ponder, followed by Delver of Secrets.
Josh played Wasteland and cast Umezawa’s Jitte, Wasting the Top afterward. Ryan’s Delver revealed Lightning Bolt to flip, and he played Scalding Tarn for Trop and the Lightning Bolt, casting Nimble Mongoose after attacking Josh for 3. Adding Savannah to the board, Josh played Qasali Pridemage and passed.
Wasteland from Ryan put Josh down to just Forest again, and he attacked for 6 damage before tapping out to cast Tarmogoyf. Even if the Jitte landed a blow, he’d still be behind—and on 10 life! He fell to 9 for a Plains fetch and equipped, attacking and trading his Pridemage and triggers for the Tarmogoyf.
Ryan swung Josh to 3 and played another Tarmogoyf, earning the scoop.

Josh kept a hand with three Wastelands to start game 2, leading with a fetch for Plains. Ryan started with Scalding Tarn and nothing else, leaving Josh to play Sylvan Library on turn 2 once he played Forest. Ryan responded by fetching Volcanic Island and Spell Snaring the Library. Playing Tropical Island, he jammed down Tarmogoyf.
Josh played Wasteland and Thalia, but Ryan Forced her, removing Spell Snare before losing his Tropical Island to Wasteland. The 4/5 Tarmogoyf attacked after Ryan played Misty Rainforest and passed. Green Sun’s Zenith for two resolved, Josh potentially exposing his Wasteland to one from Ryan while getting Scavenging Ooze. Lightning Bolt slew the 2/2, however.
Ryan knocked Josh to 11, but Mother of Runes threatened to end the offense. Josh played Windswept Heath before popping his Wasteland on Volcanic, punished when Ryan Stifled the Wasteland and he couldn’t play the second copy to get that Volcanic. Dismember slew the Mother of Runes as Tarmogoyf attacked Josh to 7, and another Stifle stopped his attempted fetchland, keeping him on 6. He played Wasteland, and tapped out for Knight of the Reliquary as a 6/6.
That threw the brakes on Ryan’s plans. Casting Brainstorm with his Trop, Ryan had a few really good draws here. He had a fetchland for Tropical Island afterward, and cast another Tarmogoyf on 12 life.
Josh's list is largely adapted from Brian Kibler's recent update.
Untapping with Knight, Josh was now ahead. He played Savannah and Thalia before Wasting Volcanic Island. Declining to Knight during the end step, Josh drew Wasteland and used it on a Tropical Island. Ryan passed again, and Life from the Loam for two Wastelands and Windswept Heath resolved, leaving Ryan on zero lands.
Now totally stable, Josh needed a way to start attacking. Each player dropped fetchlands, Josh going to 5 for his during Ryan’s end step and getting Dryad Arbor. He drew a big one on the next turn—Scavenging Ooze! Ryan played Wasteland on his turn, and during the end step Josh gained 2 life and grew his Ooze. Knight fetched a fetch during the end step, leaving Josh on 6 once more and then 7 as he got his last creature out of the graveyard.
On his own turn, Josh attacked with an 8/8 Knight and the 5/5 Ooze, with Ryan blocking the Ooze with both Goyfs. He could shrink them by removing his lost Sylvan Library from the game, but instead wound up losing the Ooze in exchange for the Tarmogoyf. Green Sun’s Zenith for two grabbed a new Ooze anyway, and that about put the nail in Ryan’s coffin. He fetched Volcanic Island and Bolted the Ooze, Josh going to 8 in response… and Ryan scooping after he drew a card.

Scalding Tarn and nothing for Ryan, Josh accelerating with Forest and Noble Hierarch. Fetching Volcanic Island, Ryan Bolted the Hierarch during the end step and untapped into Tropical Island and Nimble Mongoose. Wasteland, go from Josh, not eager to run into Stifle.
Ryan Pondered and played another Tropical Island, then Delver of Secrets before attacking. Josh flashed in Scryb Ranger, and untapped for Choke! Resolving the enchantment, Josh jumped way ahead in the game. Ryan did flip his Delver on Lightning Bolt and had a Bolt for the 1/1, enabling him to attack Josh down to 15, but this was a real uphill battle.
Thalia made things worse, and Wasteland on Ryan’s only untapped land left him all-in on Delver of Secrets. He attacked Josh to 12 life, needing four turns of no Maze, no Swords, no Jitte, no Scavenging Ooze, no Zenith… a lot!
Mother of Runes for Josh, and a swing with Thalia. Ryan attacked Josh to 9, a fetch sending him to 8 as he grabbed Dryad Arbor. Attacking for 3 himself now, Ryan bumped his Mongoose off Dryad Arbor, Mother protecting the land man. Life from the Loam for Josh grabbed him his lands back, but this game was still all about that Aberration.
Ryan attacked Josh to 5, and passed. Josh drew Noble Hierarch and swung for 3, putting Ryan on 11. Ryan had some fetchlands now, and knocked Josh to 2, which became 1 when he fetched, thinning the deck as he peeled for outs.
Knight of the Reliquary didn’t do the trick, and Ryan’s jam on Delver succeeded! “You played better than I did too,” he commented. “That isn’t right!”
