Finals: Sam Roukas vs. Kale Thompson
Sam was looking to make it back-to-back weekends for Miracles on the Open Series, but Kale hoped to put the brakes on Sam’s top-spinning with RUG Delver.
Sam sits behind a wall of Angels.
Kale kicked things off with a Delver of Secrets, and Sam fired back with a turn 2 Counterbalance. Kale attempted to Force of Will the Counterbalance, pitching Ponder, but Sam had Force of Will of his own, pitching Jace, the Mind Sculptor. The Delver trigger found Lightning Bolt, and Kale swung with his 3/2 flier, then attempted a Tarmogoyf. A blind Counterbalance flip revealed Counterspell, and the Tarmogoyf went to the bin without causing further trouble.
Sam simply cast a Brainstorm and passed the turn, and Kale’s turn was similarly unimpressive, attacking with Insectile Aberration to drop Sam to 8 and shipping back. Sam revealed Terminus off the top, swatting the bug out of the sky. Kale found Tarmogoyf next, which resolved, but Sam revealed Entreat the Angels on his next draw step to make two 4/4 Angels, which held off Kale’s Tarmogoyf, but required Sam to crack a fetchland, falling to 7.
Kale Pondered, which resolved through Sam’s Counterbalance and saw a Lightning Bolt and a Chain Lightning sitting on top. These combined with the two Bolts in Kale’s hand to give him a real shot of closing the game out. He fired off the Chain Lightning first, which dropped Sam to 4. A Lighting Bolt dropped him to 1. The third, potentially game-winning Lightning Bolt met Counterspell from Sam, and Kale passed back. Sam untapped and passed back, and the next Lightning Bolt off the top drew a Force of Will from Sam.
From there, Kale was out of solutions, and a few turns later a second Entreat the Angels arrived to double up Sam’s Angel count and close out the game.

Kale has some fiery tricks up his sleeve.
This time it was Sam with the first play of the game, attempting a turn 2 Counterbalance. Kale had Pyroblast, but Sam forced it through with a Force of Will pitching Ponder, and the Counterbalance stuck. The Next several spells Kale attempted were held off by the Counterbalance, as Sylvan Library revealed another Counterbalance and Nimble Mongoose revealed Swords to Plowshares. Kale’s third attempt, a True-Name Nemesis, made it through.
With Kale tapped out, Sam played his fifth land and slammed Batterskull into play. This kept the True-Name Nemesis from profitably attacking, and and gave Sam plenty of time to find and cast Sensei’s Divining Top to complete the lock. Kale found a resolved a Nimble Mongoose, but could only pass back, and Sam followed up with a Rest in Peace, and then a Miracled Terminus to get rid of Kale’s army.
Kale laughed. “I’m going to make you kill me!”
Sam was happy to oblige, bouncing and recasting the Batterskull, then getting to working knocking Kale’s life total away in 4 point chunks. Within a few turns, Kale had seen enough, and extended the hand.
