Finals: Stephen Mann vs. Michael Majors
Stephen had the option and chose to play. Stephen kept his opening seven, while Michael tanked before mulliganing to six.
Stephen led with a Phyrexian-mana Gitaxian+Probe and saw Delver+of+Secrets, two copies of Daze, Tundra, Misty+Rainforest, and Swords+to+Plowshares. For a land he played Flooded+Strand, sacrificing it for a Tropical+Island, casting Delver+of+Secrets, and passing on 17 life.
Michael had a Tundra and a Delver+of+Secrets of his own. Stephen drew and found himself deep in thought already. Eventually he attacked, which met no block. Postcombat he passed with no second land. Michael had a Lightning+Bolt flip his Delver+of+Secrets on his upkeep and the Insectile+Aberration attacked for three.
A postcombat Misty+Rainforest and a pass led Stephen to cast Dismember on the end step, paying Phyrexian mana and putting himself on only 10 life. Michael responded by fetching a Volcanic+Island with his Misty+Rainforest. He floated one red mana, Dazed Dismember by returning the Volcanic+Island to hand, and Lightning Bolted Stephen’s Delver+of+Secrets.
Stephen considers his sideboard options after Game 1.
Stephen had only a Nimble+Mongoose and a pass. Michael attacked Stephen to 7 and then 4, casting another Delver+of+Secrets. Wasteland took out Stephen’s only mana source, and after a draw, Stephen packed it in.
Stephen Mann 0, Michael Majors 1.
Stephen opted to play and kept his opening seven. Michael too kept his full hand.
Stephen led with Tropical+Island and Ponder, which left the three cards on top. Michael opened with Wasteland, clearing the battlefield. Stephen played and cracked a Polluted+Delta, fetching a second Tropical+Island, cast Nimble+Mongoose, and passed.
Michael played Volcanic+Island and cast Ponder, also keeping his top three cards. Stephen had a Wasteland of his own to take out the Volcanic+Island and attacked with his Nimble+Mongoose to level the life totals at 19. A second Nimble+Mongoose brought a pass.
Michael went to 18 on his turn with a Scalding+Tarn for Tundra, which tapped to cast Delver+of+Secrets. Stephen untapped and attacked with his Nimble Mongeese, neither of which was blocked. A postcombat Wasteland took out Michael’s Tundra, leaving him landless once more. Stephen cast Delver+of+Secrets and passed.
Michael did not find the right card atop his library for Delver+of+Secrets but had a Misty+Rainforest for Tundra. Stephen, on his upkeep, tried to tilt his Delver’s odds in favor with Brainstorm, but a Swords+to+Plowshares in response returned Stephen to 20 life.
Stephen finished his Brainstorm and drew for the turn, playing Volcanic+Island, casting Lightning+Bolt on Delver+of+Secrets, and attacking with the now-thresholded Nimble Mongeese to put Michael at just 9 life. Michael tried to answer with Wasteland and Stoneforge+Mystic, but the spell met Daze.
Michael makes a play as he faces down two Nimble+Mongooses in Game 2.
Stephen untapped, attacked again for six with the Mongeese, and flashed the Lightning+Bolt for the final points of damage.
Stephen Mann 1, Michael Majors 1.
Michael had the option and chose to play, but he had to mulligan to five. Stephen kept his seven.
Michael opened with a Phyrexian mana-cast Gitaxian+Probe and saw two Nimble+Mongoose, a Scalding+Tarn, a Flooded+Strand, a Wasteland, a Lightning+Bolt, and a Volcanic+Island. Michael continued with a Tundra and Delver+of+Secrets.
Stephen opened with a great deal of thought over his eight-card hand, settling on Flooded+Strand into Tropical+Island, which cast Nimble+Mongoose. Michael checked his Delver+of+Secrets trigger and missed, but had a Scalding+Tarn and a second Delver+of+Secrets to follow up.
Stephen drew for the turn and checked his opponent’s hand – two cards. Nimble+Mongoose attacked for one, putting Michael on 17 life. Postcombat, he cast his second Nimble+Mongoose and Wastelanded Michael’s Tundra. Michael sacrificed his Scalding+Tarn in response, fetching a Volcanic+Island. He cast Lightning+Bolt and then Dazed his own spell, an unusual play that nonetheless saved his Tundra.
Michael’s Delver check missed again. He had his Tundra afresh and a Stoneforge+Mystic, which found Umezawa’s Jitte. A pass, and Stephen was puzzling once more after his draw. He played Volcanic+Island and cast Lightning+Bolt on Stoneforge+Mystic before attacking Michael to 14.
Michael’s Delver check missed again. He tried Umezawa’s Jitte but that met Force+of+Will. Two Delvers attacked and Michael passed. Stephen untapped and sent in his Nimble Mongeese to put Michael on 12 life. He played a Scalding+Tarn and passed.
Michael’s first trigger saw no luck, so he used his Scalding+Tarn to search up a Tundra and a fresh card for the top of his deck, but that was a miss too. The Delvers of Secrets attacked, another two-point life trade. After Stephen’s next attack, Michael was on 9 life and Stephen 14. He cast a third Nimble+Mongoose, added a Polluted+Delta to his battlefield, and passed.
Another miss for Michael on the Delver triggers set him to thought. He attacked with only one Delver+of+Secrets, inviting a creature exchange, and Stephen accepted, leaving the battlefield two Nimble Mongeese to one Delver+of+Secrets. A Misty+Rainforest and Michael passed.
In the end step Stephen sacrificed his Polluted+Delta, turning it into a Volcanic+Island. Stephen untapped, drew for his turn, and Pondered for a while, eventually leaving the cards on top. “That’s not good,” said Michael, and the Thresholded Mongeese attacked Michael to 3. Wasteland took out a Volanic Island.
The Delver trigger missed once more and Michael sacrificed his Misty+Rainforest for a Volcanic+Island and one more chance. Brainstorm let him look at three more cards, but the answer wasn’t there and he offered the handshake.
