Finals: Vidianto Wijaya vs. Brian Moss
Esper Stoneblade took the match down in advance, as Brian elected to concede to Vidi. That said, the players agreed to play the match for the SCGLive viewers.
Each player immediately started the match with a keep, and Vidi started with Ponder on the first turn. Shuffling three immediately, Vidi passed the turn. Turn 1 Noble Hierarch for Brian put him ahead on mana, and Vidi cast Brainstorm. “Targeting me?” Brian joked. Fetching up with Polluted Delta, Vidi searched for Swamp and cast Thoughtseize.
Vidianto's Esper Stoneblade deck looked to make it two in a row for Stoneforge.
That revealed Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Sylvan Library, two Qasali Pridemage, Green Sun’s Zenith, and Wasteland. He binned the Thalia, and then lost his Sea to Wasteland as Brian resolved Sylvan Library. Vidi played Flooded Strand, and Brian paid 8 life to draw two with Sylvan. Fetching for Dryad Arbor afterward, Brian cast Qasali Pridemage.
Vidi fetched again, cast Brainstorm, and then fetched for Ponder. Umezawa’s Jitte landed on Brian’s Pridemage, and he added Noble Hierarch to the board as well as he flooded the field. Engineered Explosives for two cleared the Pridemage, Sylvan, and the Jitte, but Brian wasn’t out of gas.
Dryad Arbor swung for 3 damage, and Knight of the Reliquary hit the board. On four lands, Vidi cast Swords to kill the Knight and then played Explosives for one—that mopped up the Noble Hierarchs! Reduced to Dryad Arbor, Brian cast Green Sun’s Zenith for a new Knight of the Reliquary.
Jace, the Mind Sculptor bounced the Knight, and Vidi lost the planeswalker to Qasali Pridemage and Noble Hierarch making the Arbor big enough to swing. Stoneforge Mystic found Batterskull, but the Pridemage remained problematic. Swords killed the Mystic, and Brian attacked Vidi to 5 before playing his Knight once again and Scavenging Ooze.
Another Stoneforge for Vidi found Jitte, and he cast Lingering Souls. “I’m gonna lose, but I’m not gonna lose that fast,” Vidi declared. Brian sent his Ooze and Knight into battle, and Vidi blocked with both. Ooze removed Lingering Souls, and Mother of Runes joined the board.
Vidi passed the turn, and Brian grew his Ooze to a lethal level as he attacked. Batterskull was allowed to block, and Vidi died to lethal damage when Mother of Runes gave the creature protection from black.
Brian 1, Vidi 0
Flooded Strand for Vidi while Brian started Cavern of Souls and Mother of Runes after naming Human. Plains and a fetched Underground Sea to let Vidi Darkblast the Mother gave him an early lead. Brian cast Fauna Shaman and passed, while Vidi Brainstormed. Stoneforge Mystic found the Batterskull Vidi had Brainstormed back, and he passed.
Green Sun’s Zenith for two searched up Qasali Pridemage as a preemptive measure, and the Shaman swung for 3 damage. When Qasali Pridemage attacked on the next turn, it traded with Batterskull through its activated ability. With some room to breathe, Vidi cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor and brainstormed, a fetchland at the ready.
Brian's new to Maverick and to Legacy.
Brian cast Jitte, but Cavern didn’t slide the equipment through Spell Snare! Brian swung at Jace, but the Mystic saved the planeswalker. Wasteland destroyed Underground Sea, but Brian was falling behind against the planeswalker now. Vidi brainstormed and played Inquisition of Kozilek to discard Thalia, leaving Brian with Mother of Runes. Engineered Explosives traded for the Pridemage.
Hierarch attacked Jace for a loyalty, and Scavenging Ooze resolve and immediately removed Darkblast. Swords to Plowshares took care of the Ooze, however, and Dust Bowl took out Brian’s Savannah. He cast the Mother with Cavern and put Jace to one loyalty, ending his turn. Another brainstorm, and Vidi’s hand was overflowing with cards. Swords killed the Mother, and Vidi cast Snapcaster Mage for Inquisition, taking another Mother of Runes out.
Snapcaster blocked Noble Hierarch, and now Jace was alive against a hellbent opponent with no creatures. That basically meant the end of the game, and Vidi’s Lingering Souls looked to close it up officially. Once he found Umezawa’s Jitte, they did the trick.
Brian 1, Vidianto 1
Turn 1 Underground Sea for Vidi, while Brian began with Noble Hierarch and followed with turn 2 Qasali Pridemage and an attack for 2 damage. Island for Vidi, and Wasteland killed the Underground Sea before Brian knocked Vidi to 14. Scrubland for Vidi and a Jitte promised some potential... if that Pridemage ever died while Brian was tapped out.
Thalia and another Wasteland put the screws to Vidi, and he dropped to 10 on the next attack. Engineered Explosives got through Thalia thanks to its tricky rules, and Brian swung him to 6 life before using the Pridemage to kill the Explosives. Following up with Gaddock Teeg, Vidi wouldn’t be exploding anything else.
The next attack reduced Vidi to 2 life, and he played Snapcaster Mage as Ambush Viper during the end step. That gave him Jitte on offense, and he used its counters to kill Thalia and Noble Hierarch. Another Snapcaster blocked Gaddock Teeg when it attacked, and Green Sun’s Zenith for two found Qasali Pridemage for Brian.
He played Dryad Arbor and passed the turn, threatening potential lethal with a strong draw step. Declining to go for that, he blocked Snapcaster Mage to trade his Arbor after Pridemage killed the Jitte. Knight of the Reliquary gave Brian a potent threat, and Vidi showboated with a brainstorm from Jace.
Swords to Plowshares predictably followed, and Vidi dropped to 1 life to fetch Plains and cast Stoneforge Mystic for Batterskull. Green Sun’s Zenith for two grabbed Scryb Ranger (!) for Brian, and he hoped to squeeze through the little guy with Jace’s bounce offline and Batterskull landing a turn too late.
Jace brainstormed... Batterskull entered play... and Engineered Explsoives for two cleared the Mystic and the Ranger! When Brian drew Thalia, that pretty much locked it up for Vidi. He went to 5 life with Batterskull, Jace was well-protected, and it was all easy street from here. Knight of the Reliquary for Brian wasn’t bad, but Jace could check the big man while Batterskull did work. Bouncing it, Vidi swung Brian to 15.
Knight rejoined the board briefly, and Brian fell to 11. Knight once more, and Vidi brainstormed instead of killing Jace for an unsummon, which seemed correct. Vidi attacked afterward, and when Brian blocked Vidi used Zealous Persecution to gain the upper hand. Green Sun’s Zenith for three found another Knight, and Brian sent the turn hoping this one would hold. It didn’t—Swords to Plowshares took out the Knight and Brian deployed Mother of Runes on defense during the next turn. Swords removed that and left Brian dead on the board to Lingering Souls.
