Finals: William Cao vs. Zach Tyree
Winning his second die roll of the day, Zach had the play. He kept his starting seven, but William mulliganed to six cards with little thought. Undiscovered+Paradise and Putrid+Imp on turn 1 for Zach, while William had fetch for Savannah and Mother+of+Runes. The Imp pitched Stinkweed+Imp, and the dredge for five hit Bridge+from+Below and several dredgers.
Cabal+Therapy called Green Sun’s Zenith, revealing three lands, Stoneforge+Mystic, and Sword+of+Feast+and+Famine. Zach discarded his hand to Putrid+Imp—awkwardly including a Lion’s Eye Diamond—and flashbacked Therapy on Stoneforge+Mystic, getting a Zombie in response.
A topdecked Jitte for William was exactly what Zach hadn’t wanted to see—that was why he’d pitched the Mystic in the first place! Dredging six, Zach didn’t hit much. William tapped out for Sword+of+Feast+and+Famine, while Zach’s next dredge… also hit nothing relevant.
Mother+of+Runes picked up both pieces of equipment, no longer able to kill itself with Jitte. Zach hit two Ichorids and another Bridge+from+Below on his turn, but zero Narcomoebas. Not good! Adding Knight+of+the+Reliquary to the field, William pumped his Mother+of+Runes to hit for 7 damage, getting two counters. It couldn’t kill any of his own guys though—Zach’s Bridges were still safe, as William prioritized his clock.
Returning two Ichorids to play, Zach dredged into absolutely nothing again, and William allowed him to make it into the main phase with both Ichorids. Zach attacked with those, sending in his Ichorids—one got blocked, and the other died at the end of the turn, giving Zach four more Zombies.
Another swing with Mother+of+Runes was enough to end the game in William’s favor.

Whiffing hard on Narcomoeba had definitely cost Zach, although the game had actually involved a fair number of decisions—that Diamond would have let him access a Looting later in the game, chaining more dredges, for example. He had the play again, but things improved a bit for William after sideboarding.
City+of+Brass and Putrid+Imp started the game for Zach, while William played Tropical+Island and Noble+Hierarch. Stinkweed+Imp into the graveyard before the draw step hit another Imp and Narcomoeba, Zach pitching his Imp before playing a land and Lion’s Eye Diamond. Binning his hand to hit exact threshold, he used Coliseum.
The important hits were Ichorid, Bridge, Dread+Return, Cabal+Therapy, and Ancient+Grudge. No Looting and no second Narcomoeba—not too bad for William. Zach sacrificed a Narcomoeba to flashback Cabal+Therapy on Knight+of+the+Reliquary, hitting two and revealing two lands alongside Mother+of+Runes and Stoneforge+Mystic. The Putrid+Imp attacked.
William drew and cast Loaming+Shaman—wowzers! That put all of Zach’s dredgers back in the deck, along with his flashback cards, Ichorids, and non-Coliseum lands. “You are some kind of wizard,” Zach said, shaking his head. Between the Jitte and the Shaman, William was running at approximately inferno temperatures.
Zach drew and attacked with his Zombie token prior to passing the turn. William played Windswept+Heath and Stoneforged for Jitte, fetching Savannah and casting the Jitte. He passed without an attack for 4, and Zach discarded his new Golgari+Grave-Troll. Hitting Looting and Dread+Return alongside a Thug, Zach had the opportunity to go off, and with a higher deck density of dredgers now.
Running his Zombie into combat but leaving his Imp at home, Zach earned a trade from Loaming+Shaman and ultimately decided to pass the turn and look for a better spot with more cards. William cast Green Sun’s Zenith for two to find Scavenging+Ooze, with just enough mana back to remove both of Zach’s dredgers before he could use them—Grave-Troll stayed wisely in the hand.
Zach drew Cabal+Therapy, really needing another big dredger here to try and go off. He removed Mother from William’s hand and passed the turn, lacking any options. He lost Faithless+Looting during his end step, and it looked like it was all over.
William’s Ooze picked up the Jitte and came over for 4 damage, earning two counters on the equipment. Those killed Putrid+Imp, and Grave-Troll was removed from the game once Zach cast it. His flashbacked Faithless+Looting hit nothing, and that was the game.
