Finals: William ‘Huey’ Jensen vs. Zachary Jeffers
Farseek. Zachary did as well, though being on the draw he was at a slight disadvantage. Huey cast Olivia+Voldaren with his fourth turn, and since Zachary had no kill spell for the Vampress he played one of his own. Huey, who did not have the second black source necessary to just kill the Olivia on the opposite side of the board, pinged it and killed it with Mizzium mortars before attacking for four.
Scavenging+Ooze was Zachary’s follow-up, which was fairly lackluster in the face of an active Olivia+Voldaren. The 4/4 flyer got into the red zone, dropping Zachary to 12, before Huey simply passed. Scavenging+Ooze grew to 3/3 before end of turn, and Zachary was still unable to find a way to remove the now 5/5 Olivia from the board. Huntmaster+of+the+Fells came down for Zachary instead. Huey continued to attack with the legendary Vampire, with Zachary at 9. He passed the turn having played no spells… but then took the Ravager+of+the+Fells with the trigger on the stack, killing the Wolf token before Zachary could do anything about. Shortly after drawing his card for the turn, Zachary scooped.
Huey 1, Zachary 0.
“I can’t win if he plays Olivia first,” Zachary sung to himself as he began sideboarding.
Both players kept, and while Zachary missed his Farseek (“ha ha,” said Huey with a wry smile) Huey hit his.
“You’re just the best.”
Zachary's hoping to Bonfire his opponent's board!
“Why thank you.”
Zachary played his third land and passed, while Huey continued right on schedule with Underworld+Connections on his Rootbound+Crag. Zachary failed to find his fourth land, and Huey just continued to draw cards and add threats: first Huntmaster, then Kessig+Wolf+Run on the Wolf token, flipping Huntmaster and killing a Scavenging+Ooze in the process. Zachary decided to scoop ‘em up before going any further. Huey Jensen is your Day 2 Salt Lake City Open champion!
