Forging a Path: Quarterfinals, Romario Neto vs. Sam Roukas
Romario had the play but had to start with a mulligan. Once he kept six, he played Goblin Wedler off of Great+Furnace turn one. Inquisition+of+Kozilek revealed Trinisphere, Lightning+Greaves, Wasteland, and City+of+Traitors, and Sam selected Trinisphere. Romario proceeded to cast Chalice+of+the+Void for one (off the top, no less), then used Goblin+Welder to weld in Trinisphere with his Great+Furnace. Sam could only play a land and pass, and after Romario’s Grim+Monolith he failed to find a third land so couldn’t do anything for the time being.
Romario got in there with 1/1 goblin beats for a few turns while Sam discarded, first Inquisition+of+Kozilek and then Swords+to+Plowshares. Romario added another Goblin+Welder off of a freshly drawn Cavern+of+Souls, and then doubled the damage in 1/1 Urza’s Legacy rare beats. He also added Chalice+of+the+Void for two. In the meantime, Sam kept drawing and not finding lands, discarding one and two drops.
Sam is hoping his deck is the Blade!
Romario 1, Sam 0.
Sam led with Marsh+Flats, while Romario started off with Ancient+Tomb into Chalice+of+the+Void for one. Force+of+Will took care of that (removing Jace%2C+the+Mind+Sculptor) and Wasteland took out Tomb. A second Tomb cast Lightning+Greaves, but Wasteland number two took out the Tomb. Romario played an indestructible land on turn three (Darksteel+Citadel, take that Wasteland!) but hand no other play, while Sam fetched out a Plains to cast Stoneforge+Mystic grabbing Batterskull.
Romario played a land and passed twice, and Stoneforge put in Batterskull and started to begin the beatdown. Sam added Umezawa’s Jitte post-combat. Trinisphere showed up a bit too late for Remario, who set life totals at 6-24 before casting Jace. The Mind Sculptor is better than all, and proved it by using its +2 ability, leaving it there for Romario to draw, and incuding a quick scoop.
Romario's name isn't MUD... but his deck is!
Romario 1, Sam 1.
Romario, once more on the play, led with Goblin+Welder. Sam, on the mulligan to six, played Island before passing. Romario went to 18 off Ancient+Tomb to cast Grim+Monolith, using the mana from the artifact to cast Voltaic+Key, untap the Monolith, and cast Kuldotha+Forgemaster.
“What a hand.”
Sam cast Brainstorm and found Flooded+Strand before passing. Cavern+of+Souls naming Construct came down, then Ratchet+Bomb before Romario passed. Sam searched up Plains, but afterwards, Romario grabbed Sundering+Titan to blow up both of Sam’s lands before passing finally. Sam played Flooded+Strand to try to rebuild. 7/10 Golem entered the red zone and dropped Sam to 11, then Chalice for one was met with Spell+Snare.
Sam cast Stoneforge+Mystic to fetch out Batterskull, which is none too exciting in the face of Sundering+Titan beats. Sam fell to 3 afterward, and Romario passed. Sam pondered for a bit to try to find a way out of the predicament he found himself in, but after playing a second Wasteland and watching Romario weld in Ratchet+Bomb to deal with the Stoneforge’d in Batterskull Germ token, Sam extended his hand.
Romario 2, Sam 1.
